I drive with my feet and keep my seat fully reclined with my hands behind my head while napping.
No better reason to buy an AT ladies and gents.

My arm rests on the center console pretty well, it's just the right height and not uncomfortable. Though I drive with my right hand the most, really only switching hands on turns. That or both hands. My arm doesn't spend much time on the console really.

I appreciate the DIY armrest R&D and writeup in this thread. To each their own.
But, even the newest 911's have no armrest. Not saying Hans and Franz know best, but being old school still think 10-2 or 9-3 hand positions are best for reacting to unexpected situations encountered on pavement.

Toyota is definitely safety minded in condoning that train of thought ^
The seats and overall interior center the driver so the 9 and 3 position feels most favorable, Just my two cents though. |

I picked up the OEM armrest and it is F*cking awesome. Once you hit cruising speed and don't need to shift for a while your elbow will thank you for this addition. I commonly own sticks and have never felt right with the left arm not in control of the wheel. The OEM is the only one that caught my eye. All the other versions seem like an after thought but this one blends in very nice. When not on the HWY both hands are on the wheel anyway.

I didn't have an armrest for the first few months and didn't think i needed one. Now after having one i couldn't imagine the car without it.

I think the armrest is mostly targeted for people with automatics. I either rest my arm on the ebrake or put my hand resting, holding the shifter.

Like I said, I was comfortable without it, but now that I have one it's even better. I'm going to be driving this car for as long as it will let me so I might as well settle in. On a side-note, let me know how ten-n-two or nine-n-three works out six hours in to a sixteen hour drive!

I've noticed a couple people saying they rest their hand on the shifter. May be ok if it is an automatic, but I'd be careful doing this on a manual. I once had a VW with four speed (ages me, I know), and it eventually wouldn't stay in fourth gear, just kept popping out. Mechanic said it was from resting my hand on it for extended periods. I don't know if that still applies, but I never rest on shifter. YMMV,

I've only had my frs a little over a week now.. I dont find myself missing the armrest..
Im sure it would be missed on a long highway trip.. but not for scooting round town.. Im usually engaged in driving the thing.. both hands on the wheel.. feels very natural in this car.. an option I will consider sometime down the road.. |

I would like to second what Don Ivey said about resting hand on the shifter in a MT, it puts constant stress on the synchros, adding premature wear. Even if you don't feel it, bumps and turns are pulling the shifter every which way, its the side to side pressure that hurts them.

I originally thought not having an armrest would have been an issue for me, but I'm actually happy without it. I don't even think about it.
My right hand is mostly on the shift knob (because I drive manual) unless I'm on the freeway taking turns (no traffic) then it's on the steering wheel. My left hand is always on the steering wheel. So my elbow/arm never misses having an armrest because it's almost always on the shift knob. I am also not a very big individual, meaning, I don't have long arms, so that could be why I also don't miss it. |
