I sometimes wonder... would buying a sports bike satisfy that "speed craving" that I have?

Right now I'm not planning on buying anything until well after 5 or so years... after that point I'm hoping to buy a c6 vette...

Sports bikes are tempting though. The 600cc bikes are getting ~3.5 0-60 :O - and they cost like 1/4 price of a c6 vette used...

Anybody have any thoughts? I have a need for speed that my fr-s itself doesn't satisfy.

And lithium grease is fine, especially if its a waterproof type. It just lubricates the joint. Check/clean it (or any other lubed point) occasionally to remove any dirt buildup. Road grime can become abrasive even if its caked in grease.
Just saw this yesterday. I always stop on the edge/between lanes at stop lights and things like that for this exact reason

Holy crap dude. Why did the altima stop in the road like that? Still doesnt excuse the dude that hit him. Clearly should have been paying attention. Its videos like this that scare me out of buying a bike ( i really want a monster 696 or triumph street triple r). If only everyone else rode a bike though. It definitely makes you more aware of your surroundings and dare i say makes you a better driver.

All aboard the nope train to screw-that-ville.

This is the kind of thing that worries me >_<.

Rode for like 3 hours this weekend.....pulled muscles in my buttcheeks somehow. Getting back in the car after is so different

My roommate has a Street Triple R....and it looks way more comfy than my sport bike haha.

I do agree it makes you more aware of surroundings....cause if you arent its gonna hurt....real bad.

Good point, and I've seen other riders do it as well. I'm pretty OCD about watching my mirrors anytime I come to a stop to make sure any traffic behind me is visibly slowing down.

Warm weather gave me the bike bug again.

I am back in market looking for a bike.

Bike would be mostly a commuter/ weekend warrior. Possibly an occasional road trip, but I have never been a cross country kind of guy.

I am interested to get some other rider's opinions/ insight on these bikes or similar bikes they would recommend that they have experience with.

Here is what I am considering:

1. BMW S1000RR- This is my first choice. My biggest concern is the comfort of the bike. I have put more miles on the 600RR than any of my other bikes though and quite enjoyed it. I have ridden the S1000RR and honestly it has a pretty similar seating position to the CBR, so I am hoping it is comfortable enough to ride for some distances.

2.Triumph Speed Triple- Good all around bike, not as sport dedicated. Cheaper insurance.

3.BMW 1200GS- sometimes I end up riding off road and it is fun, but I am not sure if I could tie myself down to a bike this big/ far from a sport bike.

4. Ducati Hypermotard- seems like a good mix between a dirt bike and a sport bike. Quite a bit smaller than the gs, but can probably go just as far off road, and does not look like a cheap dirt bike. Also I am worried this will not be a very stable bike for much more than around town/ trails.

5.Ducati Streetfighter- similar to the Triumph, but maintenance etc might be the deterrent. Bike is a little bigger and probably more stable on the freeway than the triumph, also looks better.

Have you looked at the Honda CB1000R? To me it was the seating was similar to the speed triple, but not a dedicated sport bike like what you seem to want.

I was actually on their site last night looking at them. I guess I should read a bit more. There are certain things I like on the BMW's (electronic goodies etc), but honda has never really lacked quality either, they just don't have as many gadgets.

I will go look at these though soon.

Absolutely, with a caveat. You damn well better respect them. Modern sport bikes are pure performance. insanely so. I have ridden off road the majority of my life and I have built and owned some serious horsepower of the 4 wheel variety.

My stock (mostly) 06 Honda CBR1000RR is the fatest, in terms of pure acceleration, machine I've ever opened a throttle on. It is also capable of breathtaking stopping and cornering. I honestly don't have the nads to push it to the limits. I have no desire whatsoever to modify it for any more speed. Something I've never said for any other vehicle I've owned.

It more than satisfy's my need for speed, but I have huge respect whenever I gingerly twist its throttle.

I went and looked at the cb1000r on my lunch break. Good looking bike and pretty comfortable. Lacks a little character in person I thought. Also I started reading a bit more and it sounds the suspension is lacking. I think if it were a little less money it would be more appealing, but for the same price as a Speed Triple, I think the triple wins.

Thanks!

I'm looking to start on a 600cc. I know a lot of people start with 250's, but I think I'll be ok with a 600 if I baby the throttle (which I plan on doing until I'm 100% comfortable...) - and I've heard its a pretty good beginners bike if you can control yourself.

Been just casually looking as these things are fast . I like the thought of a bike. I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a beater v8 on the side (in the near future). But I kind of like the thought of a bike instead... they're faster, get damn good MPG (which is good because in my fr-s when I take it out for the weekend I get an average of high 18 maybe with my driving, lol), and would make a great commuter if I ever get in that situation (currently work from home though!). I'd just use a bike to "play with" on the weekends though, no daily driving with it or excessive freeway driving.

My entire family has a really bad stigma of bikes, so they really wouldn't like me getting one (1 death and 1 disability in the family ). But it just sounds like a very good purchase for what I want out of a "toy" - don't get me wrong I love my fr-s but its not really a fulltime toy to me, more like a compromise toy/dd toy .

Also, are Ducati's really that bad (maintenance wise)?

I wouldn't be getting a Ducati as a starter bike, but I just absolutely love those bikes! Again - this would be a fulltime toy, not a lot of miles would be put on it at all.

EDIT: Another note I'm looking exclusively at super sports.

600 is fine for a first bike. Thats what everyone bought before all of these 250's came around.

As for ducati maintenance? I have read a lot, but no personal experience. It depends on the bike. The monsters seem to have a good track record.

The valve train adjustment interval on older Ducati's is around 7500 mi. If memory serves me. It is expensive to have done and difficult to do yourself. The newer models have doubled that interval from what I've read.
