I have been spending time on ADVrider forum looking at pictures from peoples' long distance trips. Looks like so much fun!
I ended up not getting one... Not that I don't want one... My dad just hates the idea so I'm thinking of just waiting a few years. I'm moving out of his house next month but then ill have to save up.

Honest question: is a 600 a bad idea just because of the torque/power delivery....or is it because it is too fast in general?
The 600s of today are as fast as the 1000s of yesteryear. Get an old 600 or 650 (SV650 comes to mind), ride it for a year or two, and go from there. Riding off road is a completely different beast compared to riding on road with traffic around you.

If you haven't taken the MSF course, do that before you buy a bike.

600's are fine to learn on, especially if you have some experience on dirt bikes. What gets people in trouble is when they are learning thinking too much about how to control the bike that they lose track of what they are doing on the road. Also think of the throttle differently than a dirt bike. You don't have to be in a powerband (2 stroke) to get the bike to move quickly. The hardest thing to get used to about street bikes is that you technically steer away from the direction you want to turn. You learn this in MSF, but on sport bikes it is way more apparent than on cruisers. So basically you push the handle bar on the inside of the turn out to turn harder. Sounds counter intuitive but trust me this is how it works...except when going slow.

In this pic I'm doing about 60mph and still have plenty of clearance to lean but you can see that my front wheel is almost straight and maybe just a hair turned toward the camera...so that takes a bit to get used to.

Also here's the bike I had before the Ape, because Motorcycle thread!

Here's my 2008 Ninja 250R. Picked it up at the auction a couple years ago for $1100. Most fun per $ by far!

Well, I pulled the trigger! Yesterday one of my friends sent me a text, he found a bike for me for 3k. I was like 'what???? oh yeah!'

I get ahold of the seller ask a few questions about the bike. He asks for 3k out here that's pretty damn cheap! $2500 cash, an Alpine W505 radio later, I am the owner of a new bike.

Its got some damage (time to order the parts) on some of the fearings (spelling?) mainly the bottom and the front fender.

I ended up getting a 2005 CBR600, yeah its a 6....but I really cant justify 4.5-5k on a 250 for that price.

The bike is almost perfect height for me, my feet are both flat on the ground (5'10, 160 pounds)

Got some seat time (for about 40 feet haha) I was doing a stop and go to get used to the engagement point of the clutch, also to get used to putting my feet down as I come to a stop. The one thing I noticed (and bugged me) is that I didn't use the rear brake (I was between 3-5mph)

My buddy was here giving me tips, walking next to me as I went up and down our little driveway. Said I was surprisingly smooth on the gas for a person that's never ridden a street bike.

Let him drive the FR-S a little for coming over to the house, giving me some basic riding tips, getting me up on the bike and most of all helping me find the bike. He drives a 'stang...he was surprised...245 RS3s must be nice on this car haha.

Nothing wrong with a bike thread!

Unfortunately for me... sorta.. I can't afford 2 summer vehicles, so the BRZ is replacing this: 2008 Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport

Not something you see often. If anyone is looking for something a little rare its for sale in the Toronto area.

Bought it in Seattle, in 2010 (new but old stock) dealer flew me out there and I rode it home to Oshawa.

Ah, riding a bike is so....different!

Still only have a permit, never been over 50 mph (cant drive on highways yet)

Signed up for the MSF course out here .

Had my first problem on the bike....the whole shift linkage assembly fell apart....while i was riding... The 'rod' that connects the foot lever to the gearbox came undone (was not stock). Stuck in 4th gear @ 35 for about 10 miles....no real place to pull over without being around a blind corner.

In light of that, bought a full new stock system because I dont want to mess with that.

The previous owner did a 'delete' of the blinkers, getting a brake light that has the amber bulbs that blink when you turn them on (Not legal in Hawaii) So I buy a new set of blinkers only to realize, there is no way for me to wire them right now, might have to buy a whole new harness + brake light.

On a lighter note, I absolutely love riding. Always get a wave or a head nod from the other riders out here. People love looking at the bike! (Not as much as the FR-S in my case)

But cars really are jerks. I have always given bikers space in my vehicles, but many do not. Any small mistake is going to get my nailed by some jerk that isnt happy with me doing only 5 over the limit.

Yeah, I have come to realize that in a short time. The roads are totally different, checking every intersection doing a full check of all blind spots, riding behind a car on the drivers side rear wheel. Still an amazing feeling to actually ride, even if I am a little 'intimidated' by the power.

Nah 2005 CBR600RR, used, decent condition, few minor problems. The previous owner had a stock rear set on the right and a Razzio? left side, was awkward haha Had two of the rods instead of one, a vertical from foot peg to where the stock one usually bolts in, and another from there up to the gearbox.

Put the new rear sets on, yea, i used that LocTite.

One question though. I greased the pivot point of the shift level with white lithium grease....should i be using something different?

Always ride where you can be seen! If my side of the road has two lanes and thick traffic, I prefer to stick to the side of my lane that's near the neighboring lane. I've watched some riders nearly get run off the road from a car changing lanes (before/after another car) into them because they were so far off to the side that the lane appeared empty.
And lithium grease is fine, especially if its a waterproof type. It just lubricates the joint. Check/clean it (or any other lubed point) occasionally to remove any dirt buildup. Road grime can become abrasive even if its caked in grease.
