Now for a question I've always been curious about, would someone be able to use a different intake than the one supplied in the SC kit? Or would that cause issues if the intake was specifically made for the kit?

A new intake would change the needed tune somewhat. It might be within what the included tune could handle easily and it might not. The best thing to do is buy all your engine-related items at once then tune them together. Doing things piece-meal just means going back to the tuner and paying more. Because of the high compression, the ECU seems eager to retard timing, especially on 91 octane. At least that's what I'm gathering.

Genuinely curious here, what about the HKS is driving you to choosing that versus one of then other FI kits out now?

I want to keep the car more manageable as a DD... So a supercharger is better than a turbo in that aspect... And I not a fan of vortech

Since you're in Cali, I would probably go with the vortech just because it would be CARBed in the future and you shouldn't have to worry about smog and all. But you're right Evasive IS just right there and the HKS unit just looks so nice!

I decided to go for the HKS. I was informed it was going to be a pretty long time before the carb stickers come out and if I get tagged in the next couple years I'm screwed anyways. Thanks for the advice guys. The charger, oil cooler, exhaust, suspension and brakes go on next week and I'll try to get some pics and numbers up here once its all done. The referee ticket comes in two weeks.

Well it depends on the cop and how they want to treat you. I can only speak of experiences my friends have had. None have been impounded but I have had friends receive referee tickets where they have to take their car into a state controller and they make sure everything attached to your engine is stock. If you don't pass you can't register your car. So I essentially have to take the SC off and put back all the stock parts if this happens and then put them all back on. As for smog I'd probably have to do the same but there are places that will pass your smog test illegally if you pay enough (less than the cost or time to take off the parts and put them back on).

I'm not teenager or a fast driver and from the outside my car should appear mostly stock besides the wheels and the exhaust. I'm leaving the cats on the car and will probably camouflage the intercooler as to not attract attention. Only time will tell if I can avoid getting busted. Every day I see heavily modified cars, dragging along the ground, exhaust pipes screaming, blow off valves chirping, so I'm hoping if they can get away with that I can get away with this. My last line of defense is saying that its the stock turbo and this is the STI version of the car...

I really like the HKS kit from what Ive seen so far. Also Evasives car makes a pretty good argument or its potential. Vortech's press photos are very pretty but the "real life" pictures I've seen of IC pipes don't impress me for the money.

I would put an HKS kit on and then make my own IC piping and intake buts that's because I'm a metal fabricator who can't leave anything alone.
