Truck finally moves off and he decides to just drop the clutch ... and we just sat there as the clutch smoked up the car and the car went nowhere. Wasn't pretty. Sure, the car is a lot heavier but it was a V6. On a 30%+ grade hill, an emergency brake is required.

FRS=no hill assist
i'm new to stick, and have been LOVING the drama of traffic uphill...learning something new and how not to stall or screech the tires makes it even more fun!

Interesting for sure. I think in general, this is really area dependent. Meaning SF, its a must for some. Montana, probably not. In Oregon, you have a little of everything to deal with. And when i mean everything, I mean a wife that sometimes drives the car and she has to feel confident on hills

I practiced at a casino parking garage haha. Their hill is intense.

If you just bought this car and new to MT and live in MD, go to Maryland live casino and practice hill start there. Lesson well learned for me.

I always thought that it was standard. I have a limited BRZ w/ manual and if i release the clutch, near the top, the car will move forward on a flat surface and hold somewhat on a gentle incline. Very similar when I put the car in reverse and nearly completely release the clutch, the car essentially accelerates in reverse--no add'l throttle needed.

Now, I should preface this by saying I haven't driven a manual in 10+ years, but this feels different...

Engines have anti-stall, maybe that is what you are feeling. If you have good clutch pedal control most of the time the engine will try and keep adding throttle to prevent a stall. It's just too slow to work for pulling away in normal traffic without pissing everyone off.

A hill holder keeps the wheel brakes engaged until the clutch is released.

Anti-stall? My anti-stall must be broken because I have stalled a few times. Would this be covered by warranty?

Wow you guys are harsh lol

I do tend to agree though. I use my handbrake, depending how steep the hill is or if some dumbass decides to sit right behind me.

If your anti-stall was broken your engine would not idle at all. The system causes faster idle on cold mornings or when the A/C kicks on. It's not meant to prevent stalling when you try to pull away, it is more of a side-effect.

You can learn to get up any hill without a handbrake, it just takes practice. Key is not to get the clutch hot from slipping too much or it will not fully engage even with the pedal all the way out. Results in surface glazing at minimum or new clutch eventually. Hand brake is cheap insurance for your clutch.

I was being sarcastic. So it's not anti-stall, it's idle compensation? You called it anti-stall.

No, I just use my lightning reflex and catapult my car up a hill.
