1st gear has such a large torque multiplier (short gearing) that the transition between acceleration and engine braking can be jerky. Clutch in when decelerating in 1st.

1 - Noted.

2 - Loud as in it sort of sounds like I am revving up when I am not.. like maybe I am at 5k instead of 3.5k rpm. I have read that this type of engine is generally loud so that may be it? It's just that 3rd and 4th are much noisier than the rest of the gears.

3 - I am afraid of going from 6th to 4th because of losing car control.. any danger there? Or is my biggest concern making it smooth? I will read up further on rev matching.

Would you recommend taking it to the dealer to look at knowing I was pretty rough on it for the first few weeks?
Well baby steps first. When down shifting to 4th gear, take your time. Don't worry about rev matching too much and just get into gear and then accelerate. Once you feel more comfortable down shifting to a lower gear, then practice rev matching.

I know how you feel. I got my first manual transmission car in 2001. It was a Conquest TSI. I couldn't balance a clutch to save my life. I constantly chirped my tires and revved to 3k rpm to launch off in 1st gear in fear of stalling out lol. I even went as far as forgetting my e brake was on while driving and wondered why turbo was screaming and lagging.

Once you get used to driving stick, it's like 2nd nature and you don't even think about what gear to be in, you just do it.

Us BRZ as a first manual need to start a club! Good luck, and don't be worried...if you aren't smallying clutch or hearing grinding, you should be fine (or so I've been told ;-))

My brz was my first MT car and I could note all your trials and issues as about the same as mine. Here's some tips that helped me along:

Wear comfortable shoes with a comfortable sole. My driving shoes are old New Balance classics from 2005 and they feel very comfortable for clutch feel compared to my newer running shoes.

Make friends with people who have MT cars and ride in their cars, you can learn a lot about driving technique by riding along with a good driver.

Have somebody who's driven MT a long time, like a family member (my aunt's in this case) or a trustworthy friend (valet driver friend) drive your car around the block with you in it and learn some of their technique.

The car rides much smoother when you have a full tank of gas and some weight in the back. If you're going for regular commutes and not on mountain passes, put a duffle bag with stuff and supplies to add some weight. It will keep you from being thrown around as much over bumps and the clutch engagement will be more comfortable. For instance my car rides grounded and more comfortable when I have a passenger alongside, however skids wider when you do so keep that in mind.

If you get tired of driving, pull over, get a drink of water or use the restroom, come back and adjust your seat and steering wheel closeness, height. It will feel like a whole new car and be more exciting to drive.

Bought a BRZ with 7k miles on in about 1 month ago having no clue how to drive MT. I'm afraid I may have beat it up a lot because the first 2 weeks I was horrible (and terrified) when driving (shifting/etc). I must have stalled and shifted horribly dozens and dozens of times. The car was certified and I have the Gold+ warranty.

Possible issues:
- In first gear, from time-to-time the car will jerk back and forth. I noticed it the other day at about 15mph.

~my car also does this when i let off the throttle in 1st or 2nd. i think its normal.

- Pretty loud in 3rd and 4th - though this sounds like it may be normal based on other threads.

~IDK. my car is loud in every gear because of my exhaust lol.

- Possibly other things out of whack that I'm too inexperienced to even realize?

Is it worth having it looked at? Anything I should say/ask in particular if I do have it looked at? My concern is that I am so new that I may not know if I have damaged it or not.

One last question as I don't want to start a separate thread: When cruising 65mph in 6th gear and needing to quickly shoot up to 80mph... how the hell do I get the power? I read about blipping/downshifting/rev matching.. what gear would I go down to? I noticed in 6th gear, I can barely move the RPM needle at all no matter how much I floor it.

~if you need to quickly shoot up to 80 from 65 in 6th, i would downshift to 3rd. clutch down, put it into neutral, blip the throttle to around 6k RPMs, clutch down, 3th gear and slam the gas. try to do this really fast to practice. for you, since you are new to this, i would practice on an empty road going at like 45-50 MPH in 4th gear then throwing it into 3rd flooring it. this shouldnt get you into any trouble and you should feel the car take off a lot faster. DO NOT shift into a gear too low or you will be in a world of trouble. youll risk blowing the engine or losing control of the car!!

This FRS is my 2nd car in manual -- my 1st was a 2000 Celica GT that was modded by me as well. That was my learning car. Bought it for a bit of cash before I paid it off and traded it in.

I myself have only been driving a stick for under a year. So I'm kind of in the same boat as you -- CONGRATZ on the car and learning MT instead of driving as slushbox! =)
If you're having issues rev matching while downshifting, trust me it's no easy task -- I'm downshifting while braking in the wrong manor, But it's getting there -- no time to learn since i drive it to work and home only.

There is a very large amount of us here in the phoenix area on the forums. I'm sure many of us would be glad to take a look at your car and see if there is something going on. Also a lot of us track and AutoX our cars so they will be able to show you how to Rev match your shifts during spirited driving and how to preform a quick smooth shift both up and down. PM me if you want me to help you out. Also you would not be the first person in the valley to get one with a clutch that is going out. The clutch should feel nice and smooth and go all the way down. If it is feeling like a break pedal than something is wrong.
