From what I've heard and to my understanding, it's just a marketing technique in the automotive industry... It's been like this for ages, not just for our cars.
Next time you sit in a friend or family's vehicle; check the insurance papers and then look at the driver's door jamb. The car will be a year older (give or take a few months) than what is said on the insurance papers.

Having name the vehicle half a year to a year later compared to manufacture date makes the car "newer" and appeals more to the consumers' eyes.

Example: "I just bought my 2013 BRZ and I'm taking delivery in August of 2012!"

After those 5 months the car will be technically "1 years" old... But since they have it as "2013" the consumer can take advantage of another year of a "newer" vehicle.
The dealership can also sell better with the "2013" tag instead of trying to sell a 2012 model in the new year.

Example: "Would you like to purchase this "new" 2013 FR-S?" -(Vehicle manufactured date: 2012, Date of vehicle purchase: April/17/2013)

Keep in mind that US is about 10 times bigger then most country that manufacture cars. So they probably just did it long time ago to help with dealer inventory? or else we would have alot more cars sitting on dealer lot plus the time it took for all the distribution.

I wish I had that option... would have bought it in an instant. I'm a sucker for giant factory wings.

should not be that big of a problem to get another oem trunk and exchange the one with your trunk with the wing on it.
However, easiest would be to swap the trunk with someone in your area that wants that wing.

It's about which year's regulations the car meets. 2013 cars meet 2013 model year regulations and could have been legally sold starting with the first business day of 2012.

Coming from someone who has the aero kit - DO IT! especially if its cheap and no waiting period. I was worried that I'd made the wrong decision getting the aero kit right up until I took delivery. Have you seen it in person? IMO so much better than any picture I have seen
