Yea it's bad pillowball. But I can't figure out how to back out the top but because there is no Allen key slot up top to stop the shaft from spinning and hitting it with a gun isn't working because there's a nylon lock ring on the 19mm nut. Any ideas on how to stop the shaft from spinning? There's no flat spots in the shaft for an open end or anything

never, ever, use an impact gun on the SHAFT, tighten the shaft nut by hand tools only. If you can't do it while it's on the car, take it off the car, if you can't do it while it's off the car, that means you don't have the right tools.

otherwise you risk unbolting the shaft inside the body (as told to me by a Koni rep)

It's a pleasure to read a post that isn't filled with Vitriolic Crap being thrown at manufacturers but has voices of reason and sensibility. My faith in this website may be restored yet.

How did you determine the pillow ball was bad?
Did the manufacturer send you replacements?

There is something called soft jaws that aid in the gripping of the shaft for proper removal of the top nut.

So I thought I would update this thread. I have recently changed my suspension set up to air lift. But the problem persists. Has nothing to do with ride height because it clunks at any height. The clunking is less noticeable on air because of the lack of a spring or less solid objects to transfer the noise into the trunk/cabin. Anyways long story short: new suspension, same problem. Any ideas. I'm about to take it to Toyota and have them look at it because it sounds like the whole rear subframe is loose.

I too believe its my subframe. I can replicate the noise by rocking the car forwards and backwards. Its really difficult to pin point the source though.

But there is some grease on one of the mounting points of my subframe as well as it looks like my diff was opened before I picked it up. Its hard to say that toyota will do anything because the noise isn't there with stock suspension.

Might try some solid subframe spacers? MAX is coming out with them soon.

Are you replicating it with the parking break on? Because that noise is probably the drum parking break slack rocking back and forth. I've never been able to replicate the noise sitting in the driveway. I've tried bouncing the car by jumping in the trunk. It's like it has to be moving which makes me think its a axle noise or maybe the bumps are just knocking the wheel backwards towards the rear of the car a little bit as well as up to make the noise. My dealership has a smart staff and a nice service department to take it to but I fear that it won't fall under warranty and that it's gonna end up costing me 3+hrs at 80$hr rate to diagnose...I have every tool under the sun just no lift or rack to really diagnose the problem and like I said I can't replicate it not driving.

I had the idea of mounting my gopro under the car and trying to get a video that might give me a better idea of the problem. Maybe ill do that now it's warm

Not sure if this was mentioned before but I had a similar clunking in the front (sounded just like yours)and it turned out to be the sway bar end links with the aftermarket kit. Very minute movement but resulted in enormous amount of noise through the chassis. Worth a try!

Scott.
