I've heard that autos are insanely expensive to fix and break a lot more often than a manual. Personally I'm not into drifting, it's fun to do in video games but on the road in the real world it's totally impractical unless your Keiichi Tsuchiya or someone else with a lot of money. That's just my opinion though and it's also my opinion that the BRZ is more suited to road racing instead of drifting.

yes! i agree with this! it's just another reason why i have shied away from slush boxes over the years,as they ARE inherently MORE complicated by their very design, and when they break,(and at some point they will),could conceivably be cost prohibitive to repair.
on the other hand,a "direct drive" transmission is designed from the beginning for a very long lifespan, because of a much simpler design mechanically, with the most wear prone part being the "throw-out" bearing over time.this part is easily replaced after say,200,000 miles or so,at a reasonable expense...just sayin' |

It depends what auto your talking about, 2-speed Powerglide automatic outlasts any manual on the road. Built tough, slow as fuck but still built tough.
The auto is a different experience, a manual is a manual in any car. Sure, i can use the excuse that i drive in traffic every day commuting to school and that i take road trips every month (all true) but that's pointless. I bought the auto because its a good fucking transmission, a lot better then the manual in my view point. The manual doesn't suit this car well to my modern viewpoint because of its lack of power. I didn't buy this car for power, i bought it cause it oversteers like a bitch and its the only modern day car under 30K that can kill me more easy then all the others. Now can we lock this topic?

People seem to be arguing about the same points already addressed in the article I posted on the first page. This excerpt perfectly aligns with why I got the BRZ:
"...even though new automatics are faster than even the most skilled driver, there is an old-school, tactile feeling of doing something yourself. There’s a sense of accomplishment with the perfect upshift, a rev-matched downshift or just knowing a skill that others don’t. Many manual drivers find the extra level of engagement, well… engaging!" No no no, you misunderstood me, i'm saying the manual doesn't suit this car for its lack of power. Not that i want power.

Accomplishment from a perfect upshift? Come on man that's bs, Just being able to drive manual automatically makes me more skilled than the average driver plus girls like the stick anyway. It's a two door rwd sports car that's fuel efficient what's not to like.
