Perhaps providing some wholesome snacks nearby would dissuade them. Rodents like Nature Valley bars, fresh fruit and berries, a good assortment of cheeses, and perhaps a small dish of beer would be nice. After that, wire insulation will have little to no appeal.

Do not use poison. That's just creating another problem.

Pack rats collect and store debris/junk to make their nests. They're a common problem in the Tucson area. They're cute little devils. They resemble Mighty Mouse but they can cause a world of hurt. I use a "have-a-heart" trap to catch them. I take them further out in the desert and release them. They probably don't survive the new environment because of the food chain but at least they have a chance.

I can't find the link now, but awhile back i had seen a tin can kinda thing with a magnet on the back and vent's on the lid. Basically you could put moth balls or some other vapor like substance inside and it would smell up the engine bay and would keep pest's away. maybe you could make one?
I'm thinking get a metal tin like this:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Enkaustikos-ounce-metal-can-matching/dp/B000BMS22K/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2Q5IO6WKPHRK Q&coliid=I17K83E40G6PKQ"]Amazon.com: Enkaustikos 8 ounce metal can with matching lid: Home & Kitchen[/ame]

and cut some vents out in the lid and then attach a magnet to either the back or stick it inside to stick to a part of the engine compartment, probably around the edge somewhere.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Im' starting to believe its squirrels or cats. Dont really see a lot of mice.
I guarantee its a field mouse. Cute little buggers, but they can jack your engine bay up in no time. They like to eat the plastic and wiring because its usually a soy based plastic, also the hood liner is great for shredding and making a nest. That's probably what you found on your "warm" engine area. I had the same thing happen to one of my cars. Soon after, Pinky and the brain met their maker. While I love animals, when it comes to this kind of crap I don't hesitate to eliminate the adversary. Check your air vent screen, located where your wipers are, they are known for chewing the screen away and getting in your ventilation system. Good luck with killing the little bastards!

Mine was not as bad, but the amount of garbage was just concentrated on one side.

Only problem with that is that my parking lot is at ground level and its the parking lot for the building.
