I've lived in several Cities (28) and I do just that every time I'm in a new city, its worked every time, a lil scary stalkerish, but you cant ignore the results. The stalkee after you explain what you were doing normally laughs and helps you out.

*make sure to announce that your not armed and mean no harm when your following them into their driveway, didnt happen to me but a buddy got a gun pulled out on him when he did this in texas. (I've always owned a subaru so I dont know how they would take it if you follow a subaru in a non subaru vehicle, which is what my buddy did in texas.)

Also do you have anymore pictures of your engine?

April fools right?

If serious, I don't recommend people do this (following them into their driveway) unless you want to be shot/shanked/stopped by the police.

Being in the navy means you have to adapt quickly, This by far is the quickest way to find a good shop. i Didnt say it was the safest way. and i also said there were issues with this in certain states, but I've never had an issue, and ive done it so many damn times i cant remember.

Yep just went back and looked a that, if they hadn't connected your waste gate she'll be running as much boost as the turbo can push...

If you had it vent to atmosphere could you hear it open at all?

it's hard to argue that the shop should pay for this. i know it sucks, and i feel your pain, but once you're off the lot, it's all yours. unless you can prove without a doubt that something they did caused the failure (which is nearly impossible without pictures taken before the failure or something along those lines), the dealership can easily claim that the tune was to blame. they can also claim negligence on your part for not following accepted best practices (i.e. having a boost/afr gauge), or improperly breaking it in, any number of excuses.

ultimately, when we bolt this stuff onto our cars we accept the possible (unintended) consequences that come with all that fun. this is why it is so important to either know how to perform the work yourself, or know a good shop that you can trust to do quality work. dealerships generally aren't the spot.

i hope you get everything resolved in a manner that doesn't cause any hardship (financial or otherwise), but i'd be flat out shocked if you didn't end up paying the bill.

OR, you can just join a local Subaru forum/ Facebook group and simply post a quick question "what is the best/most reputable shop in the area?" and you will get your response within a day.

Bahhh "Back in my day sonny there were no facebooks." but in all honesty that's probably a better idea now a days.

That is the way it is supposed to be.

Pull the wastegate and check the spring inside.

I'd wait until the engine is pulled down before going ahead with the purchase of a new shortblock. Once it's pulled down you will be able to assess the damage to the head/valves etc on the cylinder the rod snapped in.

You're not the first 86 owner to have a rod depart the side of the block. There has been quite a few throw rods now, not all get plastered all over the internet.

You should be able to get your hands on a lightly used long motor for ~$4K

Quoted for truth. OEM turbo installs have a boost fuel cut. It's there for a reason...
