I will have better pics tomorrow after a bunch of stuff gets removed from motor can see the real damage.it appears to be just the heads but who knows without tearing the engine down and looking inside.

Thanks for sharing.

Since people are going to ask, would you mind listing out the upgrades, boost level, mileage, and what you were doing when the engine popped. That's unfortunate but will be good to learn what when wrong.

x2, I was expecting this thread to be started by full blown with their 450hp monster :/ If you're just running a stage 1 kit then it makes me very uneasy about going turbo now. :brokenheart:

upgrades

was just normal driving took off in first spun the tires regained traction shifted to second got to about 6k rpms or so and the motor shut off with a loud bang. poped the hood and smoked and steam rolled out. prior to that the car didnt feel like it had anywhere near 320whp like it was supposed to. the bov was staying open at idle causing the car idle at 1k rpms and choke and die randomly. i was waiting on a 12psi spring from fullblown to swap out the 7psi spring to see if that fixed the open bov at idle problem. TOYOTA INSTALLED it i hope to god they fix it if not i will kick someones a** i only put about 100 miles on the car after the install. i was going home to install a aem boost gauge/failsafe. i would liked to have known how much boost it hit at the time the motor blew up but guess we will never know.

Gotta pay to play...

Okay so you knew the car was not running right and chose to push it and had no boost gauge? I wouldn't drive these cars 10 miles or above 3500 RPM without a custom tune. Sorry this was just not very smart. Unfortunately there may not be much to learn from this one, you could have been running 25 psi super lean if the WG had issues.

I seriously doubt they would fix it. Dealerships will happily install parts sometimes that invalidate parts of your warranty. Well they will fix it but expect to pay several thousand dollars.

Frs300 03-31-2013 10:40 AM

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FULLBLOWNS KIT. has to do with the retards that installed it. atleast thats what i think because other ppl are running the kit with no problems at all.

its bound to happen like dwx said you got to pay to play

You had Toyota install it??? That was your first biggest problem.

Did you get any kind of warranty on the install job? If not, I'm going to say you're SOL.

Frs300 03-31-2013 10:47 AM

picture is huge dude!!!!! :confused0068:

Frs300 03-31-2013 10:50 AM

Burrcold no i did not it was void when turbo got installed but im hoping they will do something to help me out. like i said barely put 100 miles on the care after install. I had no other place to install close by and i figured they could do it because they built a tungdra that they drag race. i wont be going back to them again i will drive a few hours if i have too.

like you said im more than likely sol. i cant really prove its something they did wrong after the fact i dont think they can really say i did anything wrong other than drving it like i stole it which i wasnt really doing. we will see what happens tomorrow after the shop manager and scion/toyota rep looks at the car.

FullBlown 03-31-2013 10:55 AM

Brandon, best thing to do is to get the car back and inspect the install yourself. The only downfall to having the installer go back over the car after something like this happens, is that you can only hope they are honest if they find an install error.

A couple things that I think happened here.

1 - Wrong spring was installed and you made way too much boost on pump gas
2 - The wastegate vacuum line lost pressure to the gate because of a tear or melt
3 - The fuel pump was installed incorrectly

SloS13 03-31-2013 10:57 AM

first off, sorry.

Secondly, how the hell do you convince a dealer to install a turbo kit?

Thirdly, boost with no gauges, not even a boost gauge?

Fourthly, I had a built turbo miata nb and one day the WG stuck closed for a few seconds. It was a badass few seconds.

Fifthly, when you say wastegate - it sounds like you are talking about the BOV in some cases, and WG in other cases. (unless I mis-read) A BOV/BPV will not cause overboost but a bad/unplugged WG will.

Sixthly - unless you're tuned for idling off MAP, always recirc the BOV or deal with a shitty idle/shooting flames.

Noob4Life 03-31-2013 10:58 AM

I think you screwed yourself having toyota install your turbo kit. You should've taken it to a place with more experience on intalling turbo kits. Do you think toyota techs have ever installed a kit? My guess would be no unless you got a younger kid who does his own mods. Hate to say it but it sounds like the problem was self caused and has nothing to do with the way then engine can handle being boosted (which i originally thought it was)

I'm glad I can turbo it and feel okay still but sorry about your luck man. Next time DON'T USE A DEALERSHIP.
