I'm on the fence with this concept. I know a lot of things will get killed on it and I'm sure it will come out looking good in the end. I myself will not look into it because I am already sold on getting back into a light weight RWD platform, thus my preperations already starting with putting my WRX back to stock and preparing to order my BRZ come June. I miss my old RX-7 and I feel the BRZ will be a better fit for me, my life style and more importantly my driving style.
Yea, I drove my buddy's 2011.. I dunno, just felt ... loose ... to me. Could have been just his specific car, but if they make the 2014 similar to what the concept is, and it drives well, I'll gladly plop down the cash for it as a daily driver. My BRZ will remain my summer/fun/fast toy lol.

I hope that I'm wrong but it looks heavy, and I wonder what they will do with the STi version ?

i believe i heard somewhere its in the vicinity of 3400lbs-3600lbs about 200-400lbs heavier than the current model.

When Subaru moved the WRX badge away from the Impreza platform the Subaru Execs. were deciding 2 options, if the car should Upscale, or go hardcore. A weight increase over the current model was to be expected if Subaru decide to upscale, which seems to be the case here if the WRX now sports a more "luxurious" interior meaning they decide to go upscale. Going upscale would also indicate a relatively similar price tag of 30k-32k USD.

If they had gone hardcore the weight would have gone down a few hundred lbs, but the price tag would have shot up to current STI price levels.

I can believe in 2-4 hundred lbs over a current Impreza. I doubt a whale of 3600 lbs is happening in the world of ever-tightening CAFE standards. A 3400-3600 lbs would be a step backward in fuel economy. I bet its gonna weigh the same as the current WRX/STI but have more luxury, thus offsetting weight-saving technology advances with more content stuffed into the car. In that sense it would be 200-400lbs heavier than it could've been otherwise, without all the luxury.

WRX concept

Subaru just unveiled a WRX concept at the New York Auto Show. Looks like the current WRX and BRZ had a child.

Fun fact! these type of regs killed the pop-up headlight too.
Yes, safety killed off popup lamps (good riddance imo), but those types of regulations don't dictate styling trends though, which is what you were complaining about. The "flat nose" design on cars is just the current hotness for manufacturers. Just like the huge grill with a blacked out bar did as well. If you look at cars from any particular decade you can always pick out little cues that they all seem to have. In fact, the article states the opposite about having large flat front ends:

Quote:
For example, many cars now come with lower front ends, which may make them look faster, but also helps if a pedestrian is hit. If struck, a pedestrian is pushed up onto the car instead of smashed into it. (Pickups and SUVs often do poorly in pedestrian safety testing because of their bigger bumpers and higher front ends cause more impact on a pedestrian.)
The standards in place now are higher hood line for more engine clearance and pedestrian impact purposes, and a higher belt line for occupant safety. Yes, this does have an impact on design to some degree, but it doesn't set the final design.

Very muscular looking, I hope they can work to get some weight off of the car. Just a concept but I can dig it.

Oh and they need a massive make over in the cabin, take the WRX into the 21st century.

subaru doesn't have a good track record of transitioning from concept to production, but I do hope they do better this time. time will tell.

I like the looks overall, but no hatchback means I hold on to my Impreza a bit longer. Time will tell...

The actual dimensions are smaller than the current Impreza. Saw it either here or on NASIOC. It's wider though.

Everything I've read says it should be lighter than the present model due to the switch to the 2.0L engine and other weight saving tricks to help it be more eco friendly.

Cheers
Nathan
