LOL this thread is hilarious. I love that doggy collar on the car; now all you need is a whip and some vinyl spandex. Kinky level just went over 9000!

I know this a more expensive solution ($20 each) but the HKS filters have a magnet built into them

Why not put these at the oil pan like what other posters have suggested instead of getting a filter mag. I remember another poster saying get like neo dynanium magnets and put them at the drain pan near hte drain plug. Wouldnt these work the same way?

I dont think getting a filter mag is worth it for its price when you can just buy a magnetic oil filter like HKS like the poster above mentioned. I also made a thread about tempest oil filters and was asking for opinions if anyone has ever used them since they also have magnets built in.

Since most metal shavings are at the engine break in wouldnt getting magnetic oil filter from HKS or Tempest and putting those HD magnets at the drain pan work just as well? I was going to ask this since I saw another forum mention putting HD magnets on the drain pan when I was googling K&N/Pure Power Reusable oil filters.

Ghetto Magnetic Sump Mod.

Ok, the following picture may put to rest some people's concerns about a heated magnet in the engine bay(on a HOT oil filter/or Oil Sump).
That is a 15kg plate the magnets are holding up. I could have tried to put more but I don't have a bigger plate than that. I could spin(two times) the plate freely, albeit slowly with the magnet holding it up - WITHOUT the plate falling down.

I'm going to put these magnets on the sump next to my Fumoto valve.

Installed!!

Before...

After!!

EDIT: You may noticed that I have put the magnets somewhat to the SIDE of the sump. There's a reason for that later.
Next oil change, I'll be taking off my F108N oil valve and do some more ghetto-modding on it to make it a F108S Valve :P

So the Fumoto will be taken out during the next oil change. I'll also be sticking a magnetic pick-up into the sump to get any shavings that are attached to the HDD magnets(on the side of the sump). Then simply sliding the HDD magnets OFF the sump so the shavings/particles can be attached to the magnetic pickup.

Wherever you place the magnets make sure they do not come off after any length of use, very bad things will follow.

If you want to use magnets effectively you need to capture material before it gets circulated through the oil pump and filter, ie, you need to capture it in the oil pan. Get a magnetized oil drain plug or put heat stable magnets in the oil pan itself. Also keep in mind most of the metal components are not ferrous. I like your thinking and creativity but I dont think this application is all that effective.

this. im working on an application at work using Neodymium magnets and we are having issues with them losing their properties after processing. if they are heated to a certain point they can permanently lose their magnetic properties.

Aside from the block...shouldn't all of the important bits be steel? Cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, cam shafts, valves, springs, retainers, rocker arms. That's a lot of steel.

Does this work for aluminum engine?

Like several others here, I have no clue on the effectiveness of the famous Hard Drive Dog Collar Magnet Mod of '13, but either way, +1 to OP for creativity, resourcefulness, and comical new use of dog collars as well as tasteful color selection.

It would be cool if we could determine definitively whether this works or not.

HD drives don't run that hot.. Warm at best.. Nothing more than a spindle motor and a small servo motor for arm access.. Clever idea... Probably not very effective though..

My server HD's consistently run at around 110-120f. While not engine oil hot its by no means warm at best. This is easily confirmed by installing any HD monitoring software.

My normal desktop is only slightly cooler than that since they arent spinning all the time.
