Ghetto-Fabulous "FilterMag"
I recently had some computer hard disk drives die on me, and which were also out of warranty.
http://i46.tinypic.com/21bopya.jpg Had a nifty idea of taking apart the hard drives to get the rare earth magnets out of the hard drive and put them on the side of my 130 Subi oil filter. http://i49.tinypic.com/14tsljd.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/2qak87b.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/209mwp2.jpg The magnets are fairly strong, if stuck to the side of a fridge or metal wall you would need a screwdriver to pry them off, or at least slide the magnet off the object. I've only stuck the magnets to the side to see how they go, so far so good - they haven't fallen off. But I am thinking of getting something to secure them down with, just in case. Probably will check out a leather dog collar for them. They magnets get very very hot after a drive. Might be a cheap/free alternative for those guys who don't wanna shell out the 30 odd for a SS 300 Filtermag. |
Good thinking but I'm not sure how well it will work since its not wrapped around the filter. It might just be added weight to the car.
|
I don't think the magnets are heavy enough to actually be worried about the extra weight.
|
I'd say add a zip tie or two to secure it. Anything more would trap heat. I don't know thermal limits for magnets, but less heat is better for sure.
|
What the ? ? You have all of these top notch TRD JDM parts on your car and you bolt up some homemade magnets?
|
First off, those magnets despite being stronger than hell may loose a significant amount of their magnetic strength when heated slightly, not all magnets are equal in this respect. Second, they are going to hold stuff that is already going to be held by the filter. They are like a jail inside a jail, they don't do anything. If you want to use magnets effectively you need to capture material before it gets circulated through the oil pump and filter, ie, you need to capture it in the oil pan. Get a magnetized oil drain plug or put heat stable magnets in the oil pan itself. Also keep in mind most of the metal components are not ferrous. I like your thinking and creativity but I dont think this application is all that effective.

Do people not realize that a HDD gets super fucking hot. These magnets were chosen for their extreme strength and durability when heated. Do you know how precise a HDD is? These are much better than some magnet sleeve. I am not sure what people think makes those magnets are to make them so special because they are not. Also they are ounces of weight, the shirt on your back weighs more.

OK, I haven't seen it yet, so I'll be "that guy"...
ahem.... what's the weight? Where are the dyno charts? Can I get them with an "86" engraved on them? LOL |
Update: I picked up a leather dog collar yesterday at the local pet store.
They only had purple :/ I was hoping for a black one Anyway, looks like they are secured nicely. http://i50.tinypic.com/5obalz.jpg @ahausheer: thanks for the idea of magnets on the sump. I will use the other 3 magnets I have and attach them to the bottom near my fumoto, then maybe use a magnetic pickup in the oil sump to get the rest of them. @zooki: I should put a TRD sticker on the side of the leather belt, hmmm that would melt off. I could sharpie TRD on it instead :D |
Haha this is one of the most ghetto mods ever. And I love it!

From what i have seen, there is very very little ferrous materials in the construction of this engine.. LOTS of alloy, still have yet to invent that non-ferrous magnet.
Most if not all of the metals will catch in the filter anyway (hence why it's designed to 'filter' the oil..) HKS use a magnet in their filter.. charge you a fortune.. good marketing ;) don't buy one. Take the collar off, take off the magnets and use them to clamp your missus's nipples.. |

Now THAT one is super ghetto-fabulous!! |

Those things don't play around. |
This car deserves a spiked collar.
