Sirius subscription does work with Panasonic Head unit

There has been a lot of confusion on whether or not we can get satellite with a Sirius subscription (NOT XM) through the stock FRS head unit. Well, I just finished installing Sirius satellite radio on my FRS today. To be clear, I have a lifetime subscription with Sirius, NOT XM. I also have the basic Panasonic head unit (I don't know if this would work with the BESpoke HU). I did exactly what this guy posted over at fr_sforum.com (link), and it worked perfectly. I had to call Sirius to switch over my lifetime sub to the new radio, and they said it was the last time I could transfer it to a new radio, and charged me 75 bucks. But whatever, should be good for the next ten years.

Finally, for the Antennae, I wired it through the hole in the roof for the radio antenna following the instructions in this thread:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...sirius+install

Here are some pics of how that looks:

When you loosen the bolt holding the stock antennae from underneath, and lift it out, there are two screws underneath. If you remove those screws and remove the cover, you can thread the wire past the rubber molding to get it through the hole

You have to cut the top of the rubber down a bit to make room for the wire coming out the back, and I cut a small groove in the plastic cover so it fits properly.

Once you pass the wire through the roof, thread it through the bolt which holds the antenna to the roof (there was a yellow plastic clip in the bolt, the plug of the antenna didn't fit through it so I removed it, but the bolt still seems to fit just fine without it).

I think this will all fit under a VG shark fin. I'll update once I get mine.

Very nice but I think I'll poke a bigger hole in the antenna so you can stick that whole wire flex thingy in there.

Has anyone been able to find a place to mount the Sirius HU that is removable in the car as of yet? In my Tacoma, i had a great place to place it and take it in to my home but the FR-s does, IMO, not have a stable place. Any ideas??

My Fr-S Was delivered last June. I asked Kings Toyota here in Cincinnati to supply and install the Siri-XM kit when it was available at no additional charge. They added the clause to my contract. Last week ( Jan 2013 ). Not sure what transpired. But, they called me and then installed an aftermarket kit. Works great. Kings Toyota kept their word. That's why I buy Toyota' s and the Fr-S from this particular dealer. Overall my experience with Toyota dealers has been good.

Do you have the basic HU or the Bespoke HU? Also did you add XM or Sirius. Sure wish I could find a thread that someone is actually using Sirius through the BeSpoke HU.

I bought one of those Pioneer Satellite Tuners for $100 at Best Buy yesterday. Nice complete kit, but won't work with my FR-S base Pioneer radio. It appears that Toyota has a larger connection plug socket in the back of the OEM Pioneer radios, so the supplied data cable that comes with the Pioneer XM tuner kit GEX-P920XM will not work. My getting ready to return it to the store now. It makes me sad, as I have missed the XM since I traded my previous car in for the FR-S. I commute 75 miles a day and I have 2 1/2 more years until I can retire, but can't see the near $300 expense for the equipment alone.

Can't we just plug in the phone via USB and play it through a smartphone? I believe SiriusXM internet radio is cheaper and it doesn't use an excessive amount of data. Even if you were to go over the data limit I think its still cheaper than having the radio subscription.

My Inexpensive Sat Radio Solution

Since I'm only interested in XM Satellite radio for the next couple years, I decided to purchased one of those small onyX XM receivers that comes with a car mounting kit. Saw it at WalMart for $60. It's complete with magnetic antenna and all. It plugs into the AUX plug and plays through the OEM car radio. I have to admit, it does work very well, with crystal clear reception. I've run a couple errands with it and it never cut out. I stuck the antenna on the roof, just between the regular radio antenna and the rear window. I ran the wire under the rear rubber window seal as earlier posts suggests. The hardest part is finding a place for the docking station. I comes with multiple mounting solutions. I think I'm going to check with the dealer to see if I can purchase an extra plastic OEM radio outer dash bezzel so I can drill and mount to the right side of it. I just couldn't stand the FM radio stations in my area. (I'll bet the plastic dash part cost more than my radio)

Did you contact VG to get the right fin? The web page doesn't list the FR-S when you go in to order. I'd like to do this mod with the XM, but having seen the Beat-sonic fin I'm not sure that would cover it like the VG.

It's not exactly the same base radio, but its similar. My winter car is a '12 xB.

I have sat radio installed in both my Scions. Just use an aftermarket Sat radio plugged into the console accessory power and the Aux jack. On the xB I have a magnetic antenna on the top of the passenger side A pillar. With the FR-S I have the same antenna stuck to the centre leading edge of the deck lid. I also stuck a little square of Mylar under the antannae to protect the paint. I rarely switch channels so I have the goose neck of the sat radios bent so the radios are facing downward to eliminate any distracting and mismatched light.

Got mine through the second group buy on this forum. They are doing a third if you are interested, took a little while together it, but I am very happy with how it turned out. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31309
