They're pretty anal about the rules, and I'd hate to get turned away because of it. For instance I forgot to wear boots when riding my bike one day and they turned me away. I ended up trying to get in at the back gate, admittedly, and was able to get back on.
I might have to devise something more covert. I loathe the ideal of having unnecessary cords, or just suck it up whenever I'm on the highway. |

I don't know a damn thing about detectors, but after spending the last hour or so reading up on them (due to curiousity over this thread), I'd go with the V1, hands down.

I didn't realize that it can be used below the dashboard. Does it work well there? Others?
The V1 is dated, both design and tech. They don't seems to be growing as a company, just making the same thing for a hundred years with incremental improvements. IF I can mount(or just use) the V1 below the dash easily maybe... The 8500 isn't as good as a V1 BUT the 9500xichips seems to measures up. |

Yeah, me too!! But the K40 RL100 is said to be better! http://www.k40.com/rl100-radar-detector-pages-167.php The Passport iQ is a 9500ix with NAV and a fairly good one at that, so most say. Its rechargeable too! No wiring required and car-2-car portable. Unfortunately: Q: Is the Passport iQ fully functional when powered by it's internal batteries? A: No, the detector features of the iQ are not available when powered by it's internal batteries. The GPS functions of the iQ are fully functional when powered only by batteries. Detector features require 12VDC power to the iQ from the included SmartCord. I have my Droid windshield mounted; I voice-text, email (mostly working) but primarily I use Google Maps/NAV. Its a habit now, I get in the car and hang up my phone on the dash and go. Having a Passport iQ in its place may be a great alternative. Another option is the Escort SmartRadar system ($450) which needs some installation but can use a phone App to display everything. The SmartRadar is also compatible to their LaserShiftrer (another $400) which is bumper mounted front/back. http://www.escortradar.com/escort-smartradar/ http://www.radardetector.org/review-...adar-detector/ Last edited by boead; 03-16-2013 at 11:14 AM. |

They're not illegal to own on a base, just illegal to operate. You can just take it down. I am currently running a 9500ix on a blendmount with a wiretap, it looks factory and I've been on a few bases without comment. But if they did comment, I could simply detach it and go on my way. Would take 3 seconds.
Otherwise, any of the remote mount detectors would go completely unnoticed, and while still illegal to operate, would be invisible to the unknowing eye. |

![]() I can automute false positives in my head, I don't need the escort to do it for me. Plus, hearing false positives was my way of knowing it was still working ![]() Great now that I said that I'm gonna finally see a trooper on a highway in PA.

You can't go wrong with any of the top of the line units:
Beltronics STI-R Plus (integrated, w/gps, uber range) Escort 9500ix (windshield, w/gps, great range) Escort Redline (windshield, no gps, uber range) Beltronics GX65 (windsield, no gps, great range) Valentine 1 (windshield, no gps, great range, directional arrows, not immune to RDD) I've personally had a GPS-enabled 9500ix for years and love it. I'm planning to get an integrated Beltronics STI-R Plus eventually. You honestly can't go wrong with any Bel-Escort series model that fits your needs, or a V1. |

To all those who like false alerts, what about when a cop sets up shop right next to your favorite false alerting gas station? The 9500ix can differentiate between the sources and will alert you. Your non-gps enabled detectors will alert like they always do and you'll ignore it.
There is a reason every little kid learns about the boy who cried wolf. |
