Where's the best place to mount the unit? i.e. center of the windshield, mirror mount, etc. What works for you?
Also I found this article http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=1064 And this one http://radar-detectors-review.toptenreviews.com/ Last edited by NMMI89; 11-06-2012 at 12:40 PM. |

V1 all the way! The arrows tell me where the radar is coming from and it also shows the number of radars present.
The display of the number of radars present saved me before. All radars will give off false warnings and I used to always get a false warning at the same place I always drive through and it would always display the number 1. One night (very dark), heading on the same stretch of road, my radar went off at the same place but this time, it displayed 2 radar warnings. I quickly slowed down and sure enough, there was a radar trap just ahead. Without this, the regular radar user would have ignored the warning. |

I have the Passport 9500ci. It includes front and rear laser shifters, and radar detection. Its not detectable from RDD, it has gps built in, so it can store traps and can be updated via the web and updates are very often. This is an amazing piece of hardware.

Any SoCal guys know what's most heavily used down here? I got painted by a local motorcycle cop and I could have sworn I saw a bit of red light coming out of the gun.
If the most heavily used thing is LIDAR, then aren't we screwed unless we have a shifter/jammer since they have such a tight beam? Radar can be picked up from miles away even if it's an on/off unit but the LIDAR seems to pose a much greater threat. Nathan |

Lidar requires a different driving tactic to not get hit... Using a rabbit ahead of you may allow laser scatter from the front car to hit the detector before you get lit up... A 20 inch beam is hard to adjust to to when its pointed directly at you..

That's what I thought. I generally try not to "stick out" when driving on the freeway. Even if I'm the fastest driver in the area, drive smoothly, and keep it within a few mph of the surrounding drivers. If possible, I allow the real gunners to pass me and possibly take the bullet for me.

Do you have any (preferably extensive) experience with the Passport 9500? I feel like most people either get one of these two, never try the other, and then proclaim theirs as being best. Not judging, in fact I only have experience with the V1 and if I were to buy one today, it would damn sure be the V1 but it's a biased opinion. I used a friends V1 for a 7.5 hour road trip. 5.5 hours later when we got there I felt forever in debt to this amazing machine. Saved me two hours and a good several hundred dollars on that trip alone. From what my research tells me, some people prefer the 9500 because of its ability to "tune out" false alarms because of the GPS. Personally, I can never be too safe, I'd rather get too many warnings than not enough. BTW: I love stealth1

I had the passport 9500 xxx whatever code. I had the blue text on mine. I loved it, but sold it with my car that I had before. I am also thinking of buying one again. Saved me a few times.

I've driven a few cars with the passport, it's not bad at all, it's probably V1's biggest competitor, but I think just for my overall preference (call it bias towards V1), that's what I always recommend.

2 Years ago I was using Passport 8500x. Worked like a charm and saved me about a GOOOD 2 close ass calls. Then I upgraded to the Passport 9500xx whatever the blue screen one. Highway works just as good as the 8500x(not any better but about the same). However, when I went to cali this detector will literally catch ALL speedtraps and red light cameras and everything! Very impressed. But, I get most concerned speeding on the highway so I am about to upgrade to the Passport REDLINE. Same price as the 9500x
but from what I've read, the redline will catch any detections WAY BEFORE any other passport detectors. Which is exactly what I need for road trips and highway driving. I feel as if radar detectors are pretty much pointless in city driving. UNLESS, you live in a place where they have a lot of "Red Light Cams" and local "Speed Traps". In vegas, they don't have that shit. Only like a few places but still very few. That's why I am about to upgrade to the REDLINE!

I have owned both the V1 and 9500xi. I prefer the 9500 because its far less annoying
