Not "lucky" so much as just smart, healthy, cautious and experienced.

It has nothing to do with luck. So many people drove rwd cars for decades without having nannies and they're all fine. Now all of sudden everybody needs nannies bacause their car is constantly losing traction. I've seen a grandma with an s13 in the rain once and she was doing fine.

sorry in advanced for the amateur question but how far sideways can you get in sport mode? i am used to sliding but i would still like to leave the car in sport mode so as to save me from miscalculated errors....just wondering if anyone knew. (mind you i hardly ever do stupid things in my car. i only slid maybe twice for fun. but thats all)

If you haven't had professional "high performance driving" instruction then that should be your first "mod" for your car. Forza and Gran Turismo don't count.
Regardless of how instinctively you correct traction problems, the electronic nannies can do something you can't do, which is applying brake pressure on individual wheels. You only have one brake pedal.

Well no, as a matter of fact, they're not all fine. Lots of them died in car accidents, at least some of which likely would have been avoided with "nannies".

http://www.census.gov/compendia/stat...es/12s1103.pdf

Cars have gotten safer, and despite rising populations accident and fatality numbers have trended downward in the last 20 years. I'm not going to tell anybody that advances in active and passive safety created this trend since this chart only paints a partial picture, but not much else has changed so it's likely.

Track experience ≠ Road experience. A track is a controlled situation with known conditions and fewer variables. A public road changes constantly. Dirt, spills, gravel, traffic, weather and other drivers with varying levels of attention and skill.

You shouldn't be drifting around a bend on a public road anyway, so why bother turning off the driver aids on your drive to work? They are better, faster and more predictable at everything you can do to correct the situation anyway. If you think they're unpredictable set yourself up in a parking lot with the nannies *on* and learn how they react to different situations, so you're better prepared for when they kick in.

I appreciate your comment but even I have to admit the following and keeping in mind my previous comments:

"Luck" can sometimes be a factor no matter the level of technology or driver experience. A deer can jump out or, heaven forbid, a chunk of space debris might impact ten feet on front of a speeding car or, with current events in mind, there are unavoidable NASCAR collisions.

It is not necessarily true that "everybody needs nannies....". The Feds are the ones who dictate that we need the nannies. Many need them, some do not.

"The Feds" have nothing to do with ABS, VSC and Traction Control, which are the "nannies" being discussed.

Those are features included at the discretion of the manufacturer.

Wrong. All cars for sale in the United States of America MUST have them.
