I've also had oil leaking in my driveway, but no smell thankfully. The dealer just replaced the oil drain plug gasket, so that should do it.

re-siliconed mine just now. Hope I used enough..... The reason it leaks is because the part the plate mates to is actually 2 parts and therefore very hard to get a perfect seal.

Okay, I got it fixed at the dealer today. In my original post I mentioned that Toyota Corporate got involved. They did not end up sending anyone but just told the dealer to just fix it.

Below is how the dealer logged my issue into their system.

Below is how they stated they fixed it.

The parts used for the fix is: 1 FIPG Oil Pan

I did some internet searching on this sealant and people seem to like it better than the RTV and the Right Stuff being referenced in this thread. All I know is this is what the dealer used.

Here is a picture of FIPG

I took my car into the dealership a few weeks ago and they said that since the car wasn't leaving a puddle, they were just going to clean the area and check it again in a couple weeks. Well, I should have checked it before I left because they didn't even clean the plate or anything else (I also took it in for the GPS TSB and I don't think they even did that or order the SD card) and the car was still smelling of burnt oil. I made another appointment for this afternoon and I'm taking it back in but will be contacting SOA if they continue to do nothing.

At the risk of stating the obvious: Since Toyota makes cars, not sealants, the Toyota product, while undoubtedly good, is probably made by someone else — maybe Permatex. The label is Toyota, and the price is Toyota, but the sealant inside is probably not Toyota.

My problem with this leak, and the fix, has to do with the cover plate. It looks like little more than a flat piece of scrap metal. If it had some contours — indeed, if it were fitted to the head, shaped to fit in some way — the sealant and the plate would work much better. A ridge or a caulk "gutter" would help.

Well, the dealership said that at this time Subaru says that they are aware of this issue but it isn't severe enough to authorize the dealership to fix the leak under warranty. They did fix my GPS but that's about it. FML.

That isn't right. Even though the leak is very small, it is right above an exhaust pipe.

The Toyota (Formed In Place Gasket:FIPG) is good stuff. Its used on pretty much every thing that needs a gasket on Toyota's. Head cover is the only thing that has a rubber gasket.

If you do reseal the plate yourself be sure and:

1. Clean the engine side of the seal good. Isopropyl Alcohol is best.
2. Get all the old sealant off the plate. Clean with alchohol.
3. Get the plate on the engine in <5 minutes.
4. Get the plate tightened in <10 minutes.
5. Do not go back and retighten after the FIPG dries. Same as over torquing a felt or rubber gasket, it will crack/break and leak again.

Believe me, I know. I'm going to be contacting SoA tomorrow over this issue.
