I wonder if the rate increases in the Northeast are not in large part due to the huge losses and subsequent claims paid in the aftermath of super storm Sandy.

The OP did say he was on Long Island.

but i remember, when i was 19, with my 240sx 91, full coverage was 1800$...

Now if I invested that same amount of money over all these years, I'd have a lot of damn money and still no health problems!
At a reasonable interest rate of 7%, he'd have earned less than $2000 over those six years, ending with a bit over $10k (which he would have to pay capital gains taxes on, so 15% is gone before he even gets to use it). So, let's assume he had a) had actually put that money into this hypothetical investment and b) got into an accident at the end of that 6 years - remember, an insurance company will pay out the full amount at any time, even if it's the day you open your policy. So, he has $10k in this fund and has to pay for a) his car, b) potentially someone else's car, c) any medical services rendered (this *could* be covered by health insurance, but not everyone has it, and even if they do, they will certainly go after you for any and all money they can get), and d) a lawyer to negotiate all this. Do you legitimately believe $10k would cover this?

Even if I had kept my old car (04 Mazda 3) the premium was still $300 at best compared to the FRS which is 320 and new GTI (for comparison sake) which is 380. I'm afraid when companies realize what the FRS is come renewal time that 320 will be even higher

it will because the idiots keep crashin' and burnin' 'em
carriers will keep bouncin' the money up. they don't care because they know it's a limited production car,and people will pay the premiums regardless.
no reflection on anyone personally, however,in the final analysis,IF ya DON'T drive responsibly then you WILL get f**ked, along with everybody else who drives this car.

Am I the only one that gets calculated risk? Maybe I'm the only one who would take the risk.

If you do get into an accident, you are personally responsible to pay for any and all damages. Most people can agree that it's serious piece of mind to have their assets protected. I get it. For those lucky enough to have never gotten into an accident that was their fault, the money that they could have invested had they not had to spend it on insurance could be no small sum. There's a reason why insurance companies make considerable profit; because the amount of money they're paid significantly outweighs the money they have to pay out. But you are taking a chance.

Praise the day when I can pay under $200 a month for insurance. Currently at $275 a month just for the FR-S.

Speaking of which, do any of you know any insurance companies that will cover $5,000 of custom parts / aftermarket?

insurance carriers in this country have more wallop than the i.r.s.
for the reason you just cited. outrageous premiums that continue to outpace inflation.penalizing "good" accident free drivers to pay for the as*holes. "generally" they are able to receive rate increases in various states without insurance commissioner interference.

I didn't read the whole thread so it may have already been mentioned, but the rates hike in the NY area has a lot more to do with Sandy then anything. The insurance companies are trying to recoup the money they had to pay out. My moms insurance went up a few hundred/year on her 08 Accord too. She lives on Long Island.

For what its worth, my insurance hasn't budged and my renewal just came in last week.

Going up $30 a year I'm fine with. Going up $30 a month I'm going to blow a gasket.
