Does anyone know if on a japanese and/or euro spec the front vs. rear fog lights are controlled independently of one another or do they both turn on/off at the same time?

With the euro stalk, the front fogs have to be turned on for the rears to turn on since they use the same "collar". The collar is spring loaded (momentary contact switch) so with the front fogs turned on, you rotate the collar up to activate the rear fogs then the switch will return to the front fogs "on" position. Rotating the collar up again will switch the rear fog off. The low beams have to be turned on for the rear fogs to light up, while the front fogs can be turned on in parking light mode.

As you can see, there is some sort of logic in the body ecu controlling the activation of the fog lights.

Agreed.

I ordered bezels and harness from Nigel that should be arriving Friday, and I already have the glass Subaru fog lights. I was originally planning on installing with the button that's coming with the harness from Nigel, but since reading all this would prefer to go with the stalk method as it's cleaner and the fog indicator being functional is quite appealing. The rear fog I could probably live without, but to get it all working like a japanese / euro spec 86 would be pretty sweet.

I'm handy when in comes to cars, but i'm not up to speed on wiring or generally messing around with the electrical aspects of new cars such as the FR-S. I'm confident however with some proper instructions i'll be able to tackle this and get that OEM fit & finish I truly desire. Anyone out there with a thorough understanding of what needs to happen to make this feasible (and done correctly as I don't see pulling power/ground through that tiny wire being the correct approach) mind shedding some light and maybe adding some clarification?

Thanks for the write up! You saved us hours of fiddling with multimeters tryign to find the correct trigger. We got it installed last weekend:

860467_10200265723702039_1277890102_o by Shinjiro N, on Flickr

Used the FET japan Catz LED Fogs, Japanese bezels, and BRZ stalk. We also took the extra step of wiring it up through two relays. So the way it work son my car, is the fogs will only turn on in either the aux lights on, or headlights on posistion, and off otherwise. Will be wiring up the rear triangle fog as well this way.

Anyone complete this mod with either the Prius or Tundra stalk yet? Personally i'd like to use the stalk option but not have the dead auto spot.

Glad people are able to use this and mod it to their liking. I haven't messed with it since. Been too busy at work to get under there and fix the wiring.

so, I'm awaiting delivery of my FR-S, browsing DIY planning my future mods...

I have some basic working knowledge of automotive wiring and such, just trying to get this mod figured out in my head.

when I do the fog light mod, I'm going to order up the tundra/corolla stalk, which has been described as a straight swap for the existing stalk.

now, what I need help understanding is: is there a relay/place for a relay hiding somewhere in the engine compartment that I can hook the lamp harness up to when the stalk is installed -or- do I have to pass wires in through the firewall and somehow connect the switch wires from the lamp/relay harness up to the stalk? If it's the second scenario, which/where are the wires that you need to splice into? On an OEM harness near the steering column?

Any clarification (or pics!) will help...

Thanks,
Patrick

Don't know if this has been aswered already, but here goes.

On US cars you cannot turn on the fogs without the driving lights being on. So no, the fogs do not work independently of the driving lights. I wish they did though.

I don't think the US FR-S comes prewired for fogs - you'll have to wire it in the engine compartment. You only have to pass one wire through the firewall if you're using the stalk, tap it to the white wire (pin 4 if I remember correctly) on the stalk connector. Take note that this is a negative trigger wire
