Taking the car to the dealership today so they can have a look and document the issue and hopefully reseal the plate. While I understand why many of you are doing the fix yourselves I recommend taking the car to the dealership so they are aware of the problem. That way they make Subaru/Toyota aware so an official "fix" comes out of this and doesn't cause any issues down the line.

Exactly what he said. They need to know about this issue. By bringing your car to the dealer you are helping expand the dataset of the engineers solving our problems. The better data they have, the faster we get TSBs.

my dealer resealed this plate earlier this week. I picked it up and for a few hours the smell was terrible. I'm guessing more oil spilled out during resealing, or the sealant itself was curing.

Less than a day later, the smells *seems* to be gone. there is still some smell at high rpms, but it is nothing compared to the burning smell there was before.

I'm not 100% convinced its solved (yet), but almost there.

I agree in part with your point of view but me personally, and I know several people in the forum agree, would not let anyone besides us work on the car much less a dealer unless its a catastrophic failure. Also, I am sure people who have already installed a TC, SC kit, will be even less willing to allow anyone to work on the engine or leave the car under the dealer watch given past well documented history of A-holes beating on owners cars.

Checked my car today, no leaks anywhere, tried my best to put my hand all around that bracket. Zero problem... I am lucky to have someone who knew what he was doing built my car at the factory. I wish you guys the best.

agree with you! A heavily modified car's case wouldn't significantly improve the engineer's ability to diagnose.

I don't like others to touch my car either

I'm not sure the dealership is going to like my D3PE catch can mounted next to the battery or the big snail sitting in front of the engine. I am sure they will find a way to blame the catch can or turbo on the reason the panel is leaking. That is why I won't be taking mine to the dealership, when I am probably more capable of properly sealing it then they are.

Just checked mine, 7XX bought in May '12, near 9K miles, MT. Got oily hands now. I will take mine to my dealer on Saturday. Stay tuned...

Checked mine when I got home from work. Engine was still hot so I didn't touch it, but I didn't see any burnt off oil staining on the header pipe right under the plate.

I had this oil leak issue from the time I hit about 300 miles on the car. After 4 trips to the dealership they finally fixed it when I had 3800 miles on the car. They removed the plate, cleaned it up, reinstalled it, and retorqued the bolts. So far no more oil leaks.

I was burning oil, was leaking around the valve stem seals. Since then everything has been replaced though. Got lucky though because the engine was already apart due to new pistons and rods.

i had fixed an 86 yesterday with this exact problem, it seems that all the engines were made on the assembly line as a base engine, then later on the plate was added if it was manual and a pump added it if was auto, inbetween the plate being added, the sealant would of bin "semi" dried, and once putting the plate on (with more than sufficient amount of sealant i might add) it has ripped a bit of the sealant away from the 2 surfaced of the top and bottom rocker cover plates,...
after re-sealing the plate (30 min job) with toyota black sealant, and doing a fair few high temp runs, it was not leaking, but only time will tell.... this particular car was july build, but only had 1500km on it
