The softmod hack scares the hell out of me... pins and plugs I'd feel better about.

It's a little scary to do, but it's not hard.

If you're doing it in the winter, find a garage. The updates and the file transfers take a while, so find somewhere warm.

Here's the link for the soft-mod:

honestly since I had to pull it anyways forget about the softmod unless you wanna do the updates and such. I did soft first.

For the ground method all you gotta do is pull the deck out. Look at the where the missing white plug would go in. Top row 2nd pin in. Hook a wire to small plug and plug to that pin. Attach other end to Screw right above where that plug goes and you're done No need to buy the whole adapter to just bypass. Will prob cost you like 50 cents if you don't have a plug or any wire at home otherwise probably free. I was worried about pulling deck at first but it ended up being super easy you can get it out in under 5 minutes.

I just completed the softmod. I was worried at first but it is definitely easier than it sounds. Videos still do not play while driving but dialing numbers and searching addresses work perfectly. I also removed that warning/caution screen that pops up every time.

A couple of questions.

1. Did you guys get that TSB done before or after this softmod?

2. Is there a DIY to this softmod?

Thanks.

if you're referring to the gps tsb, I think that was only for US cars.

can't tell where you live, but the soft mod that that I linked to in my earlier post is only applicable to the pioneer decks that Canadian BRZs got. (AVIC x9310).

American BRZs and all FRS would have a different stock deck.

Cool, glad it's working for you! I may try this on a weekend sometime. Also, is it safe to ground the wire to the screw on the actual deck? or should it be grounded to the chassis?

Deck is supposed to be grounded, haven't had any issues. If you want you could ground to chasis just run a longer wire. A lot easier to yank out the whole deck.

Okay, I'm feeling a bit more confident to tackle this now. Been looking on avic411.com, youtube and google. I found a thread on iwsti.com and it sounds similar to what you did (but with an RCA harness instead of a single wire).

Link: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gr-ice-s...-bypass-3.html - Post 24 & 25.

When I found the soft-mod thread I kinda wanted the hard bypass to unlock fully, so I already bought the RCA harness from amazon.ca ($30) prior to viewing this thread. Last night, I moved the black/yellow(mute) wire to the "secret" spot as per this vid:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syl14gmIfSA"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syl14gmIfSA[/ame]

My plan:
-Try to ground the black/yellow wire to the screw right about the socket which is on the deck itself (since it's supposed to be grounded already).

-If that doesn't work, I'll try the soft-mod on top of this.

My goal is to try to do this without cutting any wires from the main harness (if possible). It seems like it worked for you and a couple people on iwsti.com.

If all else fails, I'll try splicing the newly positioned black/yellow(mute) wire with the green ebrake wire to decks the ground wire. (or take it to a shop. lol)

Wish me luck!!

Reason softmod scares me is .. what happens if I crash it.. and it becomes useless... I can imagine what the dealer would say...

So similar to what @lxsedan has done, (but in my case) I can confirm that the modified harness, grounded to the screw on the rear of the deck (pictured above) bypasses the e-brake safety.

Manual address inputs AND videos play no problem. Didn't need the softmod as lxsedan mentioned. So far I've only tested this up to 70km/h. Will try it on the highway in a couple hours.

Big thanks to lxsedan for your help! Didn't need to cut/splice any of the stock wiring. Just installed the modified harness and grounded the black/yellow cable and that was it.
