gotta remember this car wasn't really designed to run sustained high speeds like that. Its body is formed to be slippery.. unfortunately slippery doesn't deliver much for traction or stability.
First thing I'd do is some sort of spoiler out back. That smooth roll off the decklid is a recipe for lifting at speed. You're not going to get downforce out of anything that doesn't look hideously like a race car piece but disrupting the airflow off the rear will help the rear stay put to a point. The nose needs some sort of splitter to keep air from gettin underneath and stay planted. If you work the rear, have to balance the front too. There are designs out there that are pretty functional as well as cosmetic (even more that are purely cosmetic though so be ware) .. At the speeds you can go legally you want to be safe as possible so functional pieces are more important than looks. As much as I hate to say it too.. lowering the car will help to minimize under car airflow and as long as you dont go too low or too stiff. Gotta be careful there though as you dont want to make the car too stiff or bouncy. Aero stuff is hard, especially because in most markets we cant go legally fast enough to need any of it. So almost everything you'll find off the shelf is just for looks

OP...yes i have noticed something similar to what you described...while maintaining speeds of 90mph the center section of the hood waves at you. First time i noticed it i did check to make sure the hood dampers where properly installed and it was latched, it looks like however it is just the air flexing the thin aluminum hood...
To anyone that wants to give me any shit for maintaining speeds of 90+, you need to drive from San Diego to San Antonio...if you have you know already...if you havent, dont bother commenting. ;-)

That would have to be a high pressure area to be functional, right?

Right, but you can lift the edge of the hood that meets the windshield cowl and it won't extract heat because that's a low pressure area.

I was just asking if you had any kind of aerodynamics to back up that claim. Enjoy YOUR hood!

Well, there are 2 holes cut into the top of the hood... You can't tell me that there won't be any heat that escapes through them. Its going to allow heat to escape better than the stock hood, that's for sure. It looks better. Oh and it was free. It's not on your car, so you don't need to worry about it.

Suspension and aerodynamic changes are always the first things people try but considering that I find the suspension pretty optimal and aerodynamics better than in most current vehicles I'd prefer to leave them that way.
Seriously, up to a certain speed everything runs well until the hood messes it up so why not tackle the problem where it coours and not try to lessen its effect by peripheral albeit showy mods? ![]() Replacing the fake mesh in Subaru's sharkfin fender-thingie won't be a problem IMO, it looks like it's just clipsed in place, anyway. However, will that really do any good? This morning I checked the engine compartment and nowhere did I see a place to open it to the sharkfins. Also not too eager to cut parts out of the chassis just to get that done, Subaru would have my a$$ Guarantee-wise. Anyone have a photo on how the body looks underneath? |
