It cut out of my time to spend as a teenager. I think I did great in high-school, but I could have been a better student. I could have spent more time with friends, too, etc. Not to be looking for an excuse, but I find it hard to do what you want to do, work, get good grades for college, and party at the same time. I've had people tell me the moment you have a child, your life is no longer about you, but the child. Now, for a family with 150k+ salary to put their kid to work for something at that age seems unreasonable to me. If the family has the money to do it, I say let them do it. On the meantime, the person needs to be humbled by it, not go around flashing their car until they work for one, themselves. |

As for hanging out with friends couldn't you do that at night? I work 2 jobs and a make time for a social life. I think grades though should always be a number 1 priority. But that's cool you worked for it-pretty rare imo-but it's understandable when a wealthy parent buys their kid their first car- what 18 year old is going to raise that amount of money? What makes me laugh is a grown adult making what 40k a year? -out of a 4 year school and still have mommy and daddy buying them a car/0 desire to move out. They are still children who think they are grown ups-it makes me laugh a little. I don't know, it could be just me/I feel a sense of accomplishment & have pride when I work for something. (you know what I'm talking about) those other kids my age won't have that experience or gain any knowledge. I'm for parents helping out their child with 1st car/college. But there comes a point when they need to be cut off if they are too dependent to realize its time to be an adult and start buying things on their own lol. |

I'll probably buy my kid a cheap car when he's able to drive, too. That just means less asking to drive daddy's car.

I come here for help in understanding or resolving issues with the car. Unfortunately for me and anyone who lives in a cold climate, there are a few of these issues, and they keep cropping up.
Many members here are helpful with either solutions, workarounds or just sympathy for what we are stuck with north of the Mason-Dixie line. Then there are the search Nazis and loosers who have nothing to say other than "My car does not do that so stop saying bad things about the car". These people are much like the small anoyances with the car..ignore them and focus on what is good about the core product. There is plenty to like around here and some very knowledgeable individuals. |

First, you call me a kid here in anger... "Thats a bullshit excuse kid." and right there I lost all my respect for you as an "adult." Hypocritical... That's another problem. You expect our age people to be full adults, because "welcome to the real world." And yet, when it comes to treating us like adults, you start treating as like little kids who know nothing. Another thing, if I was to hand you a check for 50k and ask for nothing in return, would you accept it? If yes, then why can't we accept that from our parents but from strangers. If not. I don't know what to say that won't offend you. If I end up earning 100k+ a year, you bet in the future I'm most likely going to buy my child a car. That's why I work hard-to get a job that pays well, not for myself, but for my future family. -$1500 cars have some sort of problems with them (We had a family car like that when we first came to the US, and the engine gave up when we needed the car the most).... -the gas money that goes with a $1500 car ends up costing more in total then if you would have bought a car worth $3000+. Last but not least, I financed my car 36mo with 1/3rd down. We will end up paying more than 1000 extra for the car because of that, but if my parents had money, I rather be paying that interest to them then to a dealership. Until you get married, I believe it is your own fault, (not you personally) for maybe moving out and living alone when, you could be paying the house payment with your parents. When they grow up, you will be, hopefully, the one taking care of them. |

When I was at an automated car wash (to get the undercarriage cleaned, please don't kill me!) I noticed that if the car was even an inch lower, it wouldn't have cleared the guide rails on the wheel-pusher thing haha
And woah, geez. In a thread about how nice this community is, there's people arguing and name calling about parents buying cars for their kids. When I'm older, I would be happy to work so the rest of my family doesn't have to, and if I can afford to buy them cars and other luxuries on top of all the necessities, then I would. Of course I wouldn't want my kids to be entitled brats or anything, but if I can, I will spoil them a bit lol Just my 2 cents. |

There wont be any apology from me. I bought every car I've ever owned. I've maintained and modified every car I've ever owned and I have no respect for those that dont work for what they have. No work, no respect.
If someone I didn't know were to hand me a $50K check.. I'd ask what the catch is. Because there's always a catch. If it WAS someone I know.. I'd have more questions about where it came from and why they were giving it away. No one I know can just toss 50grand. In regards to parents providing brand new cars for their kids well people can and will do what they want but I think its not only a financially stupid Idea but doesn't teach "kid" to earn anything. Kids kill first cars. May as well start with something half way into the grave because it'll end up there quickly anyway. Being a very mechanically inclined guy if I had kids I'd use a fixer-upper to teach them how to maintain the vehicle as well. Skills that were passed to me by my Father and other highly experienced folks. Valuable skills that many people lack let alone care to have. You missed the "teaching" part of my statement (financially wise). If you hand them whatever they ask for they never learn to plan and work and buy on their own. I addressed you as "dude" but if you thought it like a "kid" Its because you're stance was and is very reminiscent of what I've been hearing from 17 yr olds since I was the same age. It never changes. Kids seem to think that because their parents have money that they should have full access to it. I think that's a load of crap. If someone wants money/stuff they should go out and earn it themselves. It builds personal character and a better society overall. Positive contribution vs expecting an effortless handout. Call me what you want, all my stuff is bought and paid for by ME and I highly respect my parents for the lessons and common sense they taught me. The only vehicle I hadn't completely covered on my own was my first new bicycle around 8 yrs old. Went halves on it with Mom n Dad. Excellent lesson.. raked and shoveled my arse off to afford that bike and loved it like I'd made it from scratch. Last edited by mangostick; 02-04-2013 at 11:57 PM. |

![]() Off topic, but I can't agree enouf with this post. Successive generations are spoilt rotten and need to learn how to earn their keep. The richer the parents, the LESS they should be spending on their children's every whim. Back on topic - constructive arguements like above makes this forum very likeable indeed. As long as we keep "spirited" arguements to a manageable level, I dont see why this forum couldn't chug along for many years to come. |

I wouldn't call it an argument, from my end its just a statement of opinion. If some agree, great.. if not.. I dont really care.
I'm here to share info about the car and socialize on the net. There is a slight flavor of newbness to this forum but its laced with good old-school experience too. We're all fairly new to this platform but some of us aren't new to cars ... so Its a good mix I see so far. I lurked for quite a while after I bought the car to get a general feel of the place. Its on par with clubwrx for relative helpfulness and humble members. Every basket of eggs has a couple cracked ones.
