I would suspect it works the same way a car can read those small chips in a standard key to start the car. The fob must have one of those chips in it as a fail safe mechanism.

My very thoughts. I don't know this for a fact, but it seems a reasonable guess. After all, why not employ current technology; no need to re-invent the wheel, or the key. In any event they charge us hundreds of dollars to replace them if we lose them!

I'm not familiar with that. Can one just remove the battery and then hold the key fob up to the button, and test whether it'll start? Perhaps you could test it and let everyone know?

You know what? That's a great idea.

I just tried it, and I can confirm that the red STi button will still work. I'm actually really impressed/surprised how as soon as I placed my key fob (no battery inside) next to the button, the car powered on by itself without my even pushing the start button.

That’s quick. (Reference for others: Randy Pobst, a successful, professional racer, turned a 1:41.64 in a Cayman R, which is arguably a bit quicker car.)

Re-watching that video this weekend, I’m more impressed than ever. That was a smooth and tidy job, excellent throttle control, good line, and a smooth, drama-free lap. You clearly have some time in hand; I’m guessing you could knock two seconds off this time without difficulty. Of course, that’s going to be pushing closer to the limit and may be exceeding a prudent pace. It’s all very nice to say one should be prepared to push one’s car off a cliff whenever tracking a car … but how about we don’t venture too close to the edge of that cliff, eh?

You did a good job, Joe. One way or another you’ve had excellent instruction, and unlike so many I see, you paid attention to the instruction. It shows. Watching you, I’d say that you also are blessed with some natural talent. Again, well done.

I think I’d take you up on your kind offer if I lived within driving distance. I’m in the Midwest, though.

Wow. Thanks, man. That's the nicest compliment anyone's ever given me on a forum. I generally follow the "smooth is fast" and "slow in, fast out" rule. I can definitely gain some more time by going into those corners faster, but then you're right that it increases risk of an 'event' occuring. I do have some friends who are very fast drivers, so that helps. One buddy of mine runs 1:41 in his bone stock spyder, so he's running Pobst level times, albeit on stickier NT01 tires and track pads.

I'm a former midwesterner myself (born/raised/schooled/trained) in Michigan. The offer still stands if you ever make your way out here. :happy0180:

I actually had exact problem at lunch today. But... after 10 times of trying to start I wiggled the steering wheel (which felt locked) and it started.

This is precisely the reason I never wanted keyless/push start on a vehicle. Why have one more thing to potentially go wrong? My cars never cease to recognize a key.

Also, I'm an idiot. I can totally see myself starting the car with the FOB in my jacket pocket, going back inside to get a drink or whatever, deciding it's too hot out for a jacket, then driving to work only to realize I left the fucking key at the house! I can't even speculate on how many times I would do something like this. I'm much better off with a key.

Is this the same keyless start as the other subby models? Maybe check out the wrx forums or something.

Def. sounds like a fob issue, do you keep the key close to the car? Do you park near other cars with keyless start? The car periodically checking for the fob can run batteries down, other cars with the same fob frequency could cause conflict.
