BRZ wouldn't start

I had an issue with the BRZ today that left me a little puzzled. I have a Limited that is keyless. I hadn't driven it in nearly a week, went to drive it and got this silly green key light flashing on the dash. I tried numerous times, got in and out of the car several times, it seemed everything in the car would work except the starter. Yes I depressed the clutch. I moved the key fob closer and closer to the instrument panel, eventually resting it in the hole next to the push to start switch. Every time I pressed the switch to start the car that darn green key light on the dash kept flashing at me, as if the car wasn't recognizing the key. After going thru the routine at least 10 times and wasting nearly half an hour, the car finally started and the green flashing light on the dash went out.
What the heck happened? When the push start button doesn't work how are we supposed to start the car? Why have a key that pulls out of the key fob if the only place one can use it is in the door or the trunk lid? Anybody else experience this dilemna? I am mistified but really don't ever want this to happen again and I don't ever want to have to take it to a dealership for any warranty or any other work.
Thanks ahead of time for any constructive comments, suggestions.

That sounds like a big problem... I hope you can figure out what made it do that. Maybe you should take it up to a dealer and tell them what happened. Has it done it again?

My FRS some time takes a few cranks to turn over, it happens randomly, temperature independent. Some times I drive it in the morning and in the afternoon it would hesitate to start.. Have no idea whats the reason...

No only once. The LAST place I want to take this car is to the dealer. I think there is better information on this website than any dealer has.

Yea, but if its a factory problem, then it would be better for the dealer to replace it so if it messes up the starter or fries a wire or relay, then its on them to replace it. Just see what you can find out here and if all else fails then id say just bring it in. Not like you would have to pay for the fix lol

I know exactly what dealer mechanics do. They drive customers sports cars as if they are on the racetrack, once they get them started. I am quite certain the dealership would tell me there's nothing we can find wrong with it and give it back to me with 30 or 40 more miles on it and a considerable amount of tire tread missing.

Have you looked through the owners book to see what the flashing green light even means???

Pete156 02-01-2013 01:26 AM

unfortunately the owners manual states that in the event that the push-button switch still cannot be operated, contact your Subaru dealer.

FUCK ME!

That blows a big one! I know what you mean about the dealers. I don't trust them either. I wouldn't leave my car there overnight without taking pictures of the car before I dropped it off. Just in case there was something really odd at pick up. After they "fix" the issue. Good Luck bud.

LMFAO!!! lol haha that sucks lol... Sorry man... Like i said, just stay with your car at the dealer if you can so that way you can keep an eye on what they are doing. Lucky for me when i bring in my vehicles to Toyota im friends with about 5 people and i walk around the shop looking at shit lol.

Manual states a slow flashing green key light means the ignition is in the "ON" mode. The manual does not even mention what a fast flashing green key light means.

usptwins 02-01-2013 01:41 AM

Maybe the fast flashing light means that the car is excited to go!!! lol jk. Hope it doesn't do that again

I appreciate all the quick responses fellas. I wish I could set up a hot wire (bypass) in case this system fails me again. I would hate to have to tow the car because of an electronic glitch.

This exact same thing happened to me and my BRZ ended up sitting at the dealer for about 3 weeks.

Turns out there was an electronic component malfunction that would not unlock the steering wheel. The vehicle will not start if the steering wheel is locked.

On the bright side, Subaru of America took good care of me and I feel much better about my first Subaru ownership experience.
