That engine never performed well, unfortunately.

Don't forget Ferrari ran a flat 12 engine back in the day.

Anyone who says a boxer engine can't make nice (and refined) noises has clearly never been around Porsches. One of my coworkers has a 997.2 GT3 which makes a sweet, sweet racket.

Sorry, maybe I am old school, but I like the car DESPITE the Scoobie-doo engine.
Is there some advantage to the boxer layout that I should know about? I know the admen tout "Lower centre of gravity" but I would have to have a numerical comparison between a boxer and a L4 to convince me it is significant.

The flat four does sound different and sound is subjective. Not my cup of tea and the sound tube makes it worse because I think of it as juvenile; its the equivalent of flipping the lid on the air filter on Dads wagon back in the 70's, or sticking baseball cards in the bicycle spokes when we were kids. The boxer engine gives the underhood a cluttered look that only gets worse if you peek below.

The front and centre oil filter is good. I'll keep that bit.

I love how smooth they are. Way less NVH than I4's. Sound might be subjective but with an exhaust they sound better than most i4's also.

Well no NOHOME it's not hard with the center of gravity thing. The vast majority of the weight involved with a Boxer is along the same plane as the heavy crankshaft. L4's have the majority of the weight 80mm+ above the heavy crankshaft. Simple man explanation

i think a lot of that is negated by how much easier it is to place an i4 lower than an h4 in an engine bay.

i think its a little overcritical to think that the original argument is stupid. there are a lot of downsides to a boxer motor. being critical in this theoretical type of way is stupid since its 90% execution. i dont like the sound of the typical subaru boxer but i think its more uel headers than anything.

to try and validate the boxers place in the industry because subaru uses them (which they do , largely, because of their awd system) is more or less point for i4s or any other engine type that gets used way more. if there was ever a lesson in engine types, i think every manufacturer would be using ls motors

I wasn't making an argument for or against the boxer. Just clearing up the CoG question. Seeing as both style of engines go in from the bottom in the modern factory, that makes the ease if installation a non issue.

yeah, my post wasnt really directed at you. the first part was just kind of a note that because of its width, often times you cant put a boxer as low as an inline engine. i dont particularly care how it goes in. once the car is together, the boxers often have to be placed higher. with enough space, that design can pay some serious dividends though.

If only they squeezed the EZ30 into the twins. That's one mean sounding H6. Look up vids on YouTube.

Let's not forget that Porsche made the boxer and still uses it to great effect.

Yes, but Porsche took a bad idea and tried to make it perfect, and still do to this day.

Though its the imperfection of the 911 is which why so many of us love it.
