Turns out there was an electronic component malfunction that would not unlock the steering wheel. The vehicle will not start if the steering wheel is locked.

On the bright side, Subaru of America took good care of me and I feel much better about my first Subaru ownership experience.

Thanks. Were you able to get the car started and drive it to the dealership? My steering wheel was physically unlocked but the car would still not start. Wonder if a sensor or relay is sticking.

Yeah i think it happened to me twice since i got my car... i hope it's just because of the temp? But oddly enough it was on tuesday where the weather was really warm...only rainy... so i dont know what it is that is causing it...

Do you guys have keyless FRS'? I didn't think they made such a thing. It's not a starter or engine issue. It's definitely electronic.

I hadn't driven it in nearly a week, went to drive it and got this silly green key light flashing on the dash. I tried numerous times, got in and out of the car several times, it seemed everything in the car would work except the starter. Yes I depressed the clutch. I moved the key fob closer and closer to the instrument panel, eventually resting it in the hole next to the push to start switch. Every time I pressed the switch to start the car that darn green key light on the dash kept flashing at me, as if the car wasn't recognizing the key. After going thru the routine at least 10 times and wasting nearly half an hour, the car finally started and the green flashing light on the dash went out.
What the heck happened? When the push start button doesn't work how are we supposed to start the car? Why have a key that pulls out of the key fob if the only place one can use it is in the door or the trunk lid? Anybody else experience this dilemna? I am mistified but really don't ever want this to happen again and I don't ever want to have to take it to a dealership for any warranty or any other work.
Thanks ahead of time for any constructive comments, suggestions.

Pete, I believe when the keyfob is not recognized, you need to actually rest the keyfob in contact with the pushbutton, then push the button in.

^ This
same procedure when key fob battery goes out

In fact you need to rest the back of the key fob (where the engraved subaru logo is) against the push star button

I didn't see this when reading through but did you try to start the car with your other fob?

There's a thing in the manual that stated the fobs go into a "sleep mode" after so long of not being used, to preserve the battery. Did you press any buttons on it before it finally started? Hopefully it's an easy solution of the fob needed waking up for the car to see it.

Beyond that, yup. Get it as close to a sensor as possible

I remember seeing this as well, this would be a good explanation....

Good suggestions all. Thank you VERY much.

I just can't figure out why it took half an hour then finally started the car. Yes I touched the fob to the start switch as the manual states. Everything worked BUT the starter. The wheel was unlocked. I could still switch to ACC, ON, and OFF. Very wierd stuff. I didn't have the other fob with me at the time or would have tried it.

My BRZ was towed to the dealer unfortunately.

Sounds like you're having an issue with your key fob. I guess you already had your car towed to the dealership, but should this happen again try changing out the battery in your key fob. This happened to me before with my old car and I, for the life of me, couldn't figure out the issue. Then the tech at the dealership charges my key fob and poof! Like a charm. Sometimes the solutions are easy, we just don't see it. Either way good luck!
