This will be the third time I'm driving in the snow without snow tires. I'll be chancing it this winter

Not arguing that either. My first post was simply in response to a poster who said "all season" tires doesn't include winter. Perhaps I should have just ignored it...

We all know there are good and bad "all season" tires, and some that are better than others in winter and (most) that are better in summers and barely worth their rubber in winter.

But as to the simple point I'm trying to respond to...an all season tire is designed to work in all seasons, according to the manufacturer. How well it does...YMMV.

now to answer your question, winter tires is more dependent on the temperature, not just snow. if where you live is really cold then you need winter tires cause your summer tires will turn into circular bricks.

Your summer tires may lose substantial grip in the cold, but they will still be perfectly safe to drive on. But in snow, not so much.


@Efenys, I drove the FR-S in last week's snow on its stock Bridgestones. I wouldn't exactly recommend it, but it's doable if you know what you're doing and if you don't need to drive it on steep hills.

Would anyone actually recommend all seasons? I've read that not too long ago but would it make a difference that would be worth it?

Also does anyone actually recommend getting snow tires for a few days of snow and otherwise spotless roads the rest of the year? Are there any snow tires that would hold up well in these conditions? I've read some of these snow tires wear quickly on dry so thats why i ask.

I had all-seasons on for a bit cause I thought I might try that (Continental DWS) and it was fine except for traction to get going. Slight incline with a little snow and I was stuck. This is embarrassing and I didn't ever want to feel like I couldn't drive somewhere because of the weather so I ended up getting dedicated snows and put them on the OEM wheels. If you're not seeing a appreciable amount of snow at any time I would've been fine on the all-seasons. They seemed to control and brake fine they just couldn't get the traction to go.

If the temperature is regularly below 45 degrees (Fahrenheit) you should be driving on winter/snow tires.

all of you guys arguing about winter tires. you know there is more to the compound than just the ability to grip in snow right? its temperature related.

i can understand where some are coming from, you have on set of wheels and want one tire, in which case all seasons are okay. all seasons are jacks of all trades master of none.

while you think you're wasting money, in the long run you're changing tires less often because you have a compound that isn't wearing as much. initial costs are higher, but over all costs will level out as soon as you go to buy a second set of the all season tires...

i for one have a different set of rims/tire for summer and winter. in the summer i track the car, and to get the best out of your car, no all season will make due. period. in warm weather a dedicated summer tire will out handle any all season, and in the winter a winter tire will out handle an all sea on tire. some of you think that winters get warm out fast by driving them on the bare asphalt, wrong, these tires will not get worn out, especially fi you get a harder compound winter tire.

the way i see it, if you are truly using the car to it's full potential, no all season will do. once you've experience something with amazing grip like a start spec or a michelin PSS, you'll never not want to run them in the summer.

all of these posts are irrelevant, and uneducated. if you dont have first hand experience, please dont say that winter tires are useless. they aren't just made for snow...

with that said i have blizzaks on the, while they are soft, they are very predictable and i've had ZERO issues in the rain/snow/sleet so far. daily driving the car they are perfectly fine, if anything next time i'll go for a performance snow tire, instead of a studdless snow to get a little stiffer sidewall.

BTW: When one says a SET of winter tires does one mean FOUR tires, front and ear, or just two tires?
Also, don't ask or tell me what, or how many tires to get. I have lived in southern Michigan and Northern Michigan all my life (that is until I move out to one of the Western states). But don't get me wrong I absolutely love reading the various comments.

Always get a set for four tires, doing only 2 isn't safe, and will likely cause interesting, possibly unexpected handling characteristics.

car cost $25,000,and i have never driven off the road into a ditch in 45 years
with any car.where you live "snow tires" would be considered "mandatory" but NOT here,and NOT for me for the reasons previously stated.

Can you now get up the same slight incline that you couldn't before?

short answer is "NO!" you'll spend "tall" money on dedicated snows,and run 'em all winter on bare asphalt.will wear out quickly.to be honest under THOSE conditions,might as well put a "match" to your money,and watch it burn!..just sayin'
