Custom garage door opener

Ok, I've googled many different terms but haven't found what I'm looking for..maybe someone here knows of a product that will work but if not I think I can come up with something.



I debated getting the Homelink mirror on my BRZ but after seeing the factory mirror and how clean and small it is I didn't want to swap it for a big, bulky homelink mirror. I only need it to open one garage door so instead I want a more stealth install. I've metered the garage door opener and its 3V DC and I can drop 12V down to 3V pretty easily. I can solder two leads on the board where the button makes contact and wire it to a relay so that's easy too. I'd like to push a factory button like traction control or something with a momentary pulse twice to trigger the garage door opener. I can use a PAC TR-7 to program the pulses and output a signal to trigger the relay..again, pretty easy. Even though all of these steps are easy they are also time consuming. I want to know if someone already sells a universal garage door opener kit that would simplify the install and cut down on time and parts. Has anyone done something like this without modifying their garage door remote and adding relays and modules? If so, what part did you use?

You might check with radar mirror.com I believe they'll throw a homelink system in your mirror for you...

Buy one of the homelink visors from ebay. You can then mount it in the headliner somewhere.

I did something like this on my Corvette C6. I installed the heated seats switch panel and used one of the buttons for my Valentine One mute and the other to open the garage door.

Since a garage opener will run for years on a single 9v battery I saw no reason to go through the trouble to step down the voltage so it could be powered by the car. I simply soldered two small wires across the switch terminals and ran those to the momentary heated seat switch.

I did the same on a custom Jeep I built years ago by adding a small push button on the dash. I used it like that for 6 years without a problem and without any worry of someone pulling the opener off the visor when the top was down.

I don't want any visible switches added. I think having all the features you want using only factory buttons is a lot cooler and more stealth than having stuff all over the place. Thanks for the reply though I do appreciate it.

So help me understand... Do you want to eliminate an existing button's function, and replace it with a different function (garage door opener), or do you want to add a new button simply with the appearance that it looks OEM?

Did you read my original post? I already have the wiring figured out..it's really quite simple. That's not my question though. My question was asking if anyone knew of a universal garage door opener that's designed to do this so I could cut down on parts used and time wiring. I think the answer to that is "No".

I am going to use either the traction control button or one of the seat heater buttons. The factory buttons still work the same as they always have but if you "pulse" them the programmed amount of times it will trigger the garage door opener.

I've built many "hidden compartments" in vehicles over the years and to open and close them you can't use a regular switch because anyone could find it and the hidden compartment which isn't so "hidden" at that point. What I usually do is wire up a secret combination...ie Passenger seat heater on, traction control off, dome override switch off, and push the brake pedal three times. Boom, compartment motorizes open. I've even been able to open up dual climate AC controls and get triggers at certain temps so I have done combinations where the drivers side is on 72 and passenger side is on 69 and dome light set to off and foot on brake and push the horn twice..the horn doesn't honk when done in the proper order, it just opens and closes the compartment. 007 shit...

I'm not trying to hide or protect anything so a single trigger is fine and to keep everything working factory I'll program it to 2 or 3 pulses. Do you understand now?

I was really just asking for a universal garage door opener intended for cars so it would have a 12v input. Some have said to just leave the battery in the remote I disassemble and solder leads to but eventually the battery will die and I build all my mods to last the lifetime of the car. I don't want to be pulling apart the car years down the road to swap a 3V battery that could've been permanently wired with a few resistors that cost a fraction of the price of one battery.

I remember hearing about a way to wire up a hidden garage door opener and tie it to your high beams so you just blink you high beams a specified number of times to trigger the door opener.

If you have a manual trans you can buy the center buttons with snow mode in the middle and use that as a single trigger.

If you can apply gate logic and sequencing in the manner listed in your reply below you obviously have a solid background in electronics. Tapping into the digital readouts would require very advanced knowledge of the automakers proprietary PAL chip which controls the HVAC module which puts your knowledge above many electrical engineers. Based on your quote below you obviously have the ability to reverse engineer complex circuits and even custom integrated circuits.

With all this in mind you should not need any assistance from anyone on this message board to research something as simple as an aftermarket garage door opener. I for one read your original post and based on the content attempted to provide a laymen's response to your laymen's question. I'm sure if you pop your trunk three times, clap your hands, turn on the wipers and honk yankee doodle dandy the answer will come to you.
