Perrins new CAI vs Perrin drop in filter. Thoughts?

So I noticed PERRIN posted about their new CAi and on the dyno it seems to only make one more HP then the drop in filter they sell.

PERRIN Cai $309.99 4hp
http://www.perrinperformance.com/brz...-intake-system

PERRIN Drop in Filter $49.99 3hp
http://www.perrinperformance.com/brz...s-panel-filter

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So is the 1hp worth the extra 260 bucks? Thoughts? Maybe PERRIN needs to do a dyno on the same day with just the filter vs cai vs stock.

PERRINs thoughts?

I'm coming from the standpoint of already having a Perrin drop in, but I don't see the 260 being worth the 1 hp they're showing there.

I'd be curious to see if independent dynos showed a higher gain, as I would imagine Perrin being one of those under promise over deliver kinda operations. If it proves to be a solid 4-5 WHP over drop in, I'd say worth it.

As I said elsewhere it comes down to your plans, if you are trying to extract every HP you can NA then it's a part of whole system. If you don't plan on doing a tune or exhaust I would just get the filter and silicone tube.

I have a hard time believing the intake only adds 2hp over the filter also, dyno numbers are one thing but how the car feels is what really matters right?

I have the drop in filter and Perrin light weight crank pulley. I don't see how it will change the feel of the car with 1 more hp. That won't even be noticeable to the average person.

I will refer this to Jeff or Chris but I would almost guarantee you would feel a difference going from the drop in to the intake. Peak dyno numbers don't tell the whole story.

Interesting. The drop-in gains pretty much everywhere, but the CAI loses power in the 2500-3000ish range.

The intake seems overpriced. Not to mention you have to remove your bumper if you ever want to clean the filter. If anyone sees how much of a pain in the ass it is to remove the push screws on the driver side fender, you'll never want to take it off again. This is the whole reason why I love the aFe intake. Has a sweet OEM look to it, the scoop picks up all the air from the front bumper, and I can access the filter easily to re-oil and clean.

Not saying the Perrin system is bad by any means, but I do think it is quite a bit overpriced compared to other intake systems and of course the cheap option of drop filter + silicon tube.

Wonder if the intake will gain more with a tune. If not, I'll probably just get the drop in.

Hey @NickFRS I am going to rip my bumper off for probably the 10th time tomorrow at Darrens and throw this thing on after putting on the exhaust. Only problem is I will be doing multiple mods at once so it will be impossible to isolate the gains from either part.

Anyone looking to do this should not fear removing the bumper. It is simple, especially if you don't have a lip kit. I'm stunned it was such a bear for some of the members. The only issue I've seen on multiple cars is the bumper doesnt want to seat right around the drivers headlight again.

You do know that Perrin stated that their is going to be a CAI made for people who want a tune and one that people would prefer to keep stock right?

I am sure it will add more power also if combined with the silicone tube as that is also made to work with the CAI. I havent checked out the blog post yet but you also use a CAI so you get better throttle response and some people like the sound you get from a CAI. Which is comparable to a lot of other intakes on the market. They priced theirs competitively vs other vendors. It will probably get more gains with a tune.

Also if you have other mods installed I am sure they will compliment each other very well adding more power. They probably only dyno'd the CAI by it self. If you get a CAI you dont ussually put it in for its gains as it will be very hard to notice most intakes power gains you do it for the sound and some people like the better throttle response/air the engine gets. This combined with the silicone tube/tune would probably do much better as expected.

Also you guys saying its a hassle to pop the bumper off. You guys are just honestly being lazy. Once you learn how to do it it should be easy as cake and take less than 5-10 minutes. You probably wont even need to clean it taht often either depending on how much you drive.

* $140 silicon tube.

That's over $450 dollars to put Perrins name under your hood.

Looking at the the numbers, (ignoring potential error from differing dyno conditions) It looks as if the CAI maybe be a gain over the drop in filter. Filter shows 163->166 and CAI 166->171. Just a bit of baseless speculation, really would need same day dyno results of stock, filter and intake. That said, I don't see myself pulling the bumper.

More confirmation as to just how good the stock airbox flows... especially with an upgraded high-flow filter. That's the best bang for your buck, period.

Now... add a header, exhaust, cams and tuning and I'm sure this intake will be awesome.

As far as having to remove the bumper for installation... maybe this is an alternative way...

(found online pics of a koyo radiator install WITHOUT REMOVING BUMPER!)
