How often do people actually touch said plastic surfaces?
If you want a premium *look*, then it's the finish that matters right? Personally I hate the bumpy texture that is on the plastic panels on most cars, if they would make it a smoother surface with dark, dull color, no ugly textures, it would look 10 times better at barely any extra cost. I don't care how it feels to the touch, as I can't see myself groping a car. |

The key is, and this is what VW did on their older vehicles that aren't the new watered down Jetta, to make the parts you touch the most soft plastic. Then use hard plastics on the places you don't touch frequently, or at all. Of course they had padded dashboards too, so that was a big plus. The reason you have textures all over the hard plastic on the dashes now instead of a smooth coating, if I remember correctly, is to cut down reflection glare from the sun. It does help. For the person who asked earlier, soft plastics are exactly what they sound like. The soft texture just feels more like a micro-fabric coating over the plastic. The downsides are sometimes they're cheap and that soft touch will start peeling off. Then it just looks like crap. The other being that they tend to scratch and mar easier than a hard plastic. |

I believe this generation Toyota will have far superior interior to the previous gen. Look at what they did to 2012 Camry, its interior is easily the best in its class. The interior design is user friendly yet very high quality. I'm sure FRS will follow the trend.

I'm not expecting much from the scion, most of their interiors look choppy an unorganized. As long as the interior plastics "look" fine, then I'll be happy.

I'm happy...or should I say that I WANT an interior similar to the 7th gen celica's. Hard light plastics in a pleasant design all around with leather/cloth trim in the places most touched. Leather steering wheel and seats and call it a day.
Just make it the nice dark grey satin finish color out of the '03-'05 and not the ugly purple/light grey flat cheap looking plastic out of the '00-'02

Could be wrong but it feels like the soft touch (or soft plastic) dash on my 07 Impreza makes the interior a tad bit quieter. If not quieter maybe just less harsh? I notice it when I get in peoples cars with hard dashes though, no likey.

I don't give a toss for anything besides the seat, steering wheel, and shifter. Make the rest out of whatever's cheap and light.

Since its going to be a Scion, the interior plastic is going to look and feel cheap. It's going to be a step below the plastic found in the Toyotas.
My Tacoma has tons of plastic in the interior but doesn't look cheap b/c some parts have texture, some are painted to look like brushed aluminum or titanium along with contrast in between the plastics. Hopefully the interior design team for this car will come up with something decent.

There's definitely a big difference if you go from one to the other. The softer plastics are just so much better to the touch, the hard ones are horrible, hollow, just makes the whole interior feel cold and unlovable. I want to jump into my car and like how the door felt as I opened and closed it. I want to look around at an interior that's pleasing to the eye, with colours that are nice, materials that suit the car, textures that compliment the quality. When you touch certain areas, you want to have words like 'quality', 'class', and 'sleek' come to mind, not 'rubbish', 'cheap', or 'half assed.'
Spent a bit of time in the Toyota Aurion (basically a redesigned, Aussie Camry) and their interiors are nice. The higher end one has quite an impressive interior with a sexy smoked glass sort of look to the radio surround area. |
