What I suggest you do to minimize the amount of work that you'll end up doing is to not install the lockout on the shaft of the bps kit, but install everything else up to the rubber boot and then take it for a quick spin in 1st gear up to 6k rpm, if you have no rattle you should be in the clear.

I also installed the BPS short shift and I too have the rattle. I have been working with Matt all weekend and up until yesterday trying different things to isolate the rattle. I think that we may finally have figured it out.
![]() The rattle was caused by the linkage with attaches to the base on the shifter. There was some metal on metal contact there. If you notice from the picture there are two washers in either side of the hole at the base of the shifter. One washer is thicker than the other. I simply swapped them. I have been driving all day and there are no rattles. In fact, there is very little vibration in the shifter. Much less than stock. Car shifts like a dream. Matt went above and beyond trying to help, often quite late at night.....I don't think either one of our wives are happy about this. Those of you with rattles should definitely try this.

Hmm. . I'll have to try it when I get a chance. The only problem is that stupid rubber boot at the bottom. I tore mine when I removed it and managed to get it re-installed, but had to tape it up. Not sure if I'll be able to remove it and replace it without damaging it even further.

I thought the ringing originated from the screw that holds the reverse lockout mech. They send out a modified screw to fix the ringing, which mellowed the ringing.
I took out the screw, put an additional rubber o-ring on the end, then spray a coating of plastidip.. Then installed the screw making sure not to over tighten it (so not to damage the end o-ring.

I havn't been following this thread for awhile and have yet to install my short shifter. Just for clarification, in the pic it shows both washers, one on either side and one being thicker than the other. Are they in the proper orientation in this pic you provided or do they need to be reversed ? A proper diagram would be nice if someone can draw one up

Also you can see in these pics that I have swapped the bushings and what i think is the culprit is the little notch machined into the shaft for the face of the bushing seat...the bushing looks plenty thick but still rattles. ![]() ![]()

Ok so i did a little modification to my shifter in an effort to get the rattling to stop. Basically i made a rubber washer out of the little boot that covers the linkage to shifter connection to put on the linkage shaft that goes through the shifter bushing. In order to have clearance on the other side of the bushing for the washer and clip you have to sand down the thin side of the bushing just a little thinner.
The rattle isn't 100% gone, but it is far less prevalent, I'd say maybe 98% better, so I am thinking that if the thicker bushing was about 1-2mm thicker the rattle would be completely gone. The culprit seems to be that the box shape of the bushing holder puts one of the corners just a little too close to the linkage arm and with the natural shake and vibration of the transmission it makes contact...i was going to round off the corners but decided to refrain from that. I'll try an get a hold of BPS sometime this week and see what we can come up with as a more permanent solution than the rubber washer i made. |

there is a tolerance issue somewhere that BPS needs to address before I pay for and can endorse or enjoy this thing, glad I havent ordered, seems there is
a) case of BPS not reproducing this issue on their test car b)not fixing it in production I trust it can be worked out, just teething pains for this new car! Looking fwd to ordering once its truly fixed. I cant add testing/troubleshooting this to my plate right now.. has ID and OD been triple checked witha quality caliper? |

I installed my BPS shifter after waiting for many weeks just to get the "rattle" issue ironed out. I was told to swap the factory installed poly bushings on the BPS shifter during the installation. I was able to keep all the rubber boots in one piece with no rips or tears and the install went really smooth.
I warmed up the car by driving it easy for a few miles and once it was up to operating temp I redlined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with no rattle at all. This was all I had time for that day and I was very satisfied with the improvement in shifter feel and how quick shifts are completed and very precise as well. This made me anxious to drive the car again...yesterday I took advantage of light traffic to go play around a little. We don't have good, twisty roads in south Florida so instead we resort to freeway interchanges and on/off ramps. I know an area that has a few banked, medium speed, fun corners. I was having a blast and on one particular corner, a banked 270 degree transfer from one freeway to another, I was pushing it pretty hard. There is a dip near the exit that usually gets the rear end to come out in a nice, controlled slide until the exit. I was in 3rd gear pretty close to redline and the shifter made a quick, rattling sound for about a second or so. It surprised me as I haven't heard any rattles in the car since purchasing it and I'm OCD about rattles. This was the last corner where I could really push the car safely on my way home so I haven't tried to duplicate it again. I'm wondering if the load generated from the slide is the culprit. I also have the Perrin Transmission support installed and the Perrin rear shifter guide and both were great improvements prior to the BPS shifter. I'm loving the feel of all my shifts now but now I'm trying to generate the sound again and see if I can find the culprit. I can see it now.. "No Officer, I'm not drifting on public roads...I'm just checking the shifter for rattles"
