BPS Short Shift Kit

So finally got my BPS Short Shift kit in the mail, first impressions out of the box: Amazing finish, the red anodized reverse lockout is gonna look awesome. Gonna install it tonight, hopefully it's not gonna be tough!

I'll post more once i get it installed and mess around with it.

Can't wait to see pics , can you take a couple of pictures in different gears with the stock first?!! That would be greatly appreciated

Wonder if it'll get rid of the notchiness--let us know, thx.

Supermassive 12-17-2012 11:46 PM

Yeah I'll take some pics of stock vs BPS. Also I still haven't felt this "notchiness". I'm running stock fluids still and my shifter is like butter...

Ok so I got it all installed, and it's pretty nice so far, have yet to drive it around but it feels ok just rowing through the gears with the car off. First things first though, install was a breeze with the included instructions. That said, if you have trouble changing brake pads i would suggest taking it slow through the steps so you don't break anything.

Second...f**k that little rubber dust boot for the shift arm...I didn't get it back on, and i don't think any amount of swearing and busted knuckles is gonna get it back on.

Ok on to before and after pics.

As you can see, the kit shortens the shifter, so the angles stay the same but the throw is shorter...dunno if it's worth the cost to some, but I like it and I finally got rid of that shitty plastic reverse lockout...so win win for me!

very nice!

Looks great! Update when you get a chance to drive it!

Well I took it out for a short blast to Jack in the Box for some chicken sammiches and well it feels good but rattles pretty badly, I'm gonna try some fixes I have in mind and see if I can isolate the rattle, if I am right about my hunch as to what's causing it i should be able to fix it with a little electrical tape and grease. If not, BPS stands behind it's products so I will work with them to get it sorted.

I did my clutch/flywheel install this weekend, and I couldn't get that damn rubber dust boot back on the shifter. I just got pissed and tore it off because racecar.

I wonder if that rubber shift boot was dampening the rattle you're now experiencing...

It sure looks pretty. The rattle seems worrisome if only for the sheer annoyance of it. I'm sure they'll offer a solution/explanation.

I like it, I just don't like that it's $40 more than the next most expensive short shifter they make for any other car, and $100 more than the brand new STI one. The BRZ/FRS markup is getting a bit silly.

They are definitely working on the rattle and I think have it solved. I know it is expensive, but the aesthetics, fit and finish, and engineering that went into it is pure art. I would love to get another one and leave it on my desk as a display piece.

Ok so about the rattle. I spent the better part of today ripping my interior apart trying to locate where the rattle comes from, and my conclusion is that i have no freaking clue. I do know that it's not because of the lock out because it rattles without the lock out being attached. I called Matt at BPS and we tried a number of fixes but nothing worked or lessened the rattling. Hopefully with some looking into this deeper we can root out the actual cause.

As for the boot dampening the rattle...well I put the stock shifter back in without the boot and guess what...no rattle. That boot is to keep dirt and debris from getting into the linkage and possibly causing wear.

This really worries me.. I've had my BPS shifter sitting in the garage waiting on a WC Lathe Werks knob before installing..I thought they sorted out the rattle. My car is rattle free and I intend to keep it that way so hopefully the install goes smooth and I have no rattles after. I also bought the Perrin rear shifter bushing but I'm installing that first tomorrow so I can isolate if I have any noises or issues. Much harder to troubleshoot when you install ten things at the same time.
