Spoon has a lot of experience with Hondas. It would probably require a huge investment of time and money to reach a similar level of familiarity and expertise with a Toyota/Subaru GT86. That's my take-away.

If the Toyobaru isn't a sports car because it doesn't have vtec, only 2 seats, and a ride that doesn't rattle your teeth out and whatever other rationalization I missed then forever banish me to the wasteland that is a "sporty-car not a sportscar"

The definition of a sportscar, in my opinion, should not have to be defined by its era. What makes a sportscar a sportscar in 1950, 1960, or 1970 should also make it a sportscar in any other time period. To that end, I don't think horsepower or handling alone is enough to define it. |

but it's quite interesting how Spoon feels the need to buy an 86 to do R&D in the first place. especially when they don't have any plan to produce parts for it.
I would like to hear their opinion/idea on how they would enhance the car to their liking. |

There was another video at Spoon that showed how there are alot of design elements in Honda chassis' and frames that lend themselves to being converted into race cars. The video showed Mr. Ichishima under a honda fit explaining a few things.
Not to be a fanboi (I bought a brz after all) but the idea that Spoon and companies like it have no work because Honda doesn't make a "sports car" is kind of silly. The Japanese mentality and attitude towards their cars is totally different, people will spend thousands of dollars on their type R's and RX7s just keeping them running in tip top condition. Many companies even provide a service where they essentially rebuild an entire vehicle so it is basically "brand new" for the customer. The North American idea is always "what tangible benefit am I getting for my money?" and I think the Japanese (and to an extent the europeans) have realized that the only benefit is really personal satisfaction, and if a 2000 Civic Type R with 150k on the clock provides that when a new car does not, you're best to spend your hard earned money on that. Am I happy with my BRZ? Hell yes, nothing brand new compares. If Honda made something like an 80% S2000 coupe would I buy it and fill it with Spoon parts?.....Probably. |

if honda doesn't come out with an affordable sports car any time soon, it's not going to look very good for Spoon. they should be smart and diversify their products/services if they want to stay in business. we all know that the S2000s and the ITRs will eventually fade away. |

What makes it outdated? The BRZ/FR-S is the one with McPherson struts. I don't agree w/ what the Spoon CEO says.. the BRZ/FR-S is definitely a sports car. I would consider a FWD car like the ITR/CTR to be 'sporty'.

outdated in terms of engine and chassis maintenance. eg., some of these hondas are 10+ years old.

"This is my personal opinion but the 86 is a "sporty car" and not a "sports car"" Here's my translation of this vid from 3:45~4:35 "We modded the 86, drive it and test it. We were more convinced how amazing Honda is. If we want to build the 86 to compete at the same level with Type-R or S2000, we need to put 2, 3, 4 times the time & money to build it to same level as Type-R &/or S2000. That's how close Honda Type-R & S2000 is to real sports car, they are like racing cars with window washers equipped. Again we were amazed how amazing Honda is." That's a rough translation of the section of the vid. He didn't say anything like "the 86 is a "sporty car" and not a real "sports car"". UNLESS he stated that in a vid that isn't used. ![]() Hope that helped out |
