According to Spoon CEO, the 86/FRS/BRZ is a sporty car, not a sportscar

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGj3oC-wPF0&list=UUQjJzFttHxRQPlqpoWnQOpw&index=1"]Spoon - Type One Interview: S2000 - Type R Rigid Collar Gusset Plate - YouTube[/ame]

Fast forward to 3:15. Spoon purchased an 86 for R&D but doesn't plan to sell any parts for the car. In factory form, the 86/FRS/BRZ is a sporty car and not a sportscar. A sportscar is a S2000 or any of the Honda Type Rs. To make the 86/FRS/BRZ compete at the same level as the Hondas, you will have to invest a lot of money into the car.

What are your thoughts?

It's an awesome platform begging for more power... He's partially correct, IMO.

ANY of the Honda Type R cars? Bullshit. S2000? Yes. Traditionally a sports car is defined as a 2 seater, with or without roof (roadster). So your Integra Type R and Civic Type R vehicles are not "sports cars"; they are "sporty cars" just like the WRX, GTI, and our beloved twins.

EDIT: He's a Honda fanboy...that's all there is to it.

I think just upgrading the OEM tires to something that's more sticky will improve a lot of things about the car. However, I'm sure Spoon has done that before they made their evaluation.

A brand new S2000 costed about $35,000. That's almost $10,000 more than the FRS. Is he saying that the car wouldn't be able to compete with a S2000 even with $10,000 worth of aftermarket parts and tuning?

Spoon CEO didn't specify, but I believe he was specifically talking about the last Civic Type R (FD2). In stock form, I believe that would beat an 86 on any track. I think the older Integra and Civic Rs are pretty equal against the 86.

If I'm not mistaken, Spoon makes parts for the Honda Fit/Jazz which is definitely less 'sporty' than the twins.

Then again, Spoon has always worked mainly on Hondas so it doesn't surprise me that they are biased against the 86.

You may be right. That completely slipped out of my mind.

Paging @ichitaka05 for translation.

Spoon hasn't had much to work with ever since Honda discontinued the S2000. Heck, you could say that they haven't had much to work with for a decade since the S2000 has largely remained the same throughout its entire lifecycle.

So whats the acceptable threshold of power for a sports car? Does it matter what era it's from?

Spoon is well known in Japan as a tuning company that builds some pretty incredible Honda derived cars. Those who have followed Japanese tuning scenes are usually familiar with the big names such as HKS, Greddy, and Apexi.

Companies like Spoon, RE Amemiya, JUN, Tomei and many others are middle to small sized and usually focused more on specific car makes.

We should care to a point because the twins were built with all these tuners in mind. Toyota more or less said that they are leaving the real tuning and upgrades to these companies.

If a well known tuning company like Blitz comes out and state that they cannot do much with the twins that is not a good thing.
