It might not just the usb out put. Could be the nav app. Some phones (like the one I am using). Can use more power what can be charged. If i have any form of constant data streaming, my phone loses more power than what it can be charged, even from a wall charger

I am seriously considering doing this since i hate using the silly cigarette outlet for my charger, just want a little more clarification on what goes where so i don't futz it up.
I can try to slap a DIY together on my BRZ.

Also, if you want more power theres better regulators out there such as the lm323 which I think is capable of supplying 3A.

you can put a 2000mA host in without issue, just FYI

it wont fry the device youre charging. this is what the supply is capable of. what the device draws is different.

I'd go with a automotive ipad charger

I'm no pro. But I imagined it something like.. the moar the engine roar, the faster the phone charges.

What phone do you have Z86?

iPhone 5.
I have a cigarette lighter charger which is 1A and it charges fine when running just about everything. But for me its messy to have a 3rd USB port when the car has 2 already - but sadly the other 2 don't charge the phone when I'm running a power hungry app.

Not sure about the iPhone 5 but the previous versions will not pull full power from an actual USB port. It checks the voltage on the data line, and when it is a specific value(which is not consistent with data) it pulls full power. Simply put it will not take full power from a data port, which is what the head unit has.

Most Droid phones are 5v 1 amp. On most computers they are 5v .5 amps. I run my Droid on the cig lighter with a "high Power" usb charger that is 5v 1 amp. Take my Asus Transformer Pad, it is 5v 1.2 ams and a normal usb will not charge it.
