Pictures will help, but that still won't put the problem in front of me to work on it, to try and fix it, which sucks. So the best bet will be, take pics and when your free to work on it, call me (you should have my number), and we'll try to figure it out over the phone.

Thanks
Sounds like a plan, Thanks!

Interesting i hope your car doesn't go back into lip mode. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. I want to do this mod but i don't want that to happen.

You would be fine, the problem I am 99% sure has to do with the BRZ Push Start Key Fob, because in my car there is an antenna in the bumper and the wire runs through the grommet you would use. For the FR-S, that grommet has no cable running through it so you should be good to go.

Your car doesn't have the cable running through the grommet like he stated, the cable is specific to BRZ Limiteds. If you'd like a kit, feel free to shoot me a pm and I'll get you an invoice.

yea mine has the cable running through it too. I put a little slit through the grommet and put the wires from the kit through it. I haven't really driven the car since i installed it but i will update if the lights do go on again.

For proper draining of the battery: unhook negative lead, press brake pedal. Powering the brake light should drain any residual charge faster than waiting 5 minutes.

I'm bad with wiring diagrams (though this service manual is lightyears ahead of my GD Impreza wiring diagrams) so I'm not sure where to follow up on WHAT that key antenna is/does, though the word "key" is key here. Hehe, stupid pun.

The Limited Key Fob has a transmitter and that cable ends with an antenna that picks up the key fob signal. This will let the car know the Key Fob is close so it is ok to allow the trunk to be opened via the trunk release.

I did the same thing, and it was HARD. Last night I ended up cutting the grommet and tying the cable together. I will test it out like this and if they limp mode comes up again, I will insulate the cables and try again.

I just turned on the car this morning and drove around a bit just to make sure and no lights.

We'll get it figured out.
@johnb831

Ok, I figured this out tonight. If you turn your car with the lights on (lights set to auto or completely on), the car goes to limp mode. My guess is that antenna cable in the bumper is extremely sensitive to any amount of electricity and since you are turning the car on with the taillights on, some electricity leaks to it, and it calls for the car to go on limp mode.

On the other hand, if you turn the car on with the headlights off, the car starts up and behaves normal, no limp mode at all.

Tomorrow I am going to use some heat shrink isolating tubes around the antenna cable to see if I can completely insulate it.

I will post updates here.

Good night.

That's weird... I have started the car with the headlights on "Auto" before and there was no problem.

Do you have a rear fog light kit installed like us, and do you have a limited BRZ?

Edit: I see you do have the limited BRZ. But this issue is specific for the rear fog light kit installed through the bumper grommet shared with the rear key fob antenna.

Ahh!... Gotcha! I guess I missed the part where it says about the rear foglight kit...

My bad!
