BTW, where are you doing 200km/h (124Mi/h) anyway?
The only possibility that I think may be a contributing factor is the upper brackets. When the hood is closed the gas springs are fully compressed, so they are technically preloaded to their maximum force. However, since the dampers are pointing towards the front of the hood the force that is acting on the brackets is also in the same direction. This could possibly provide some preload to prevent this phenomenon, but since the hood movement is perpendicular to this preload it might not act as expected. But I really have no idea since I'm not familiar with this "hood lifting at speed" problem. So maybe it will, maybe it won't, unfortunately we can't test at those speeds.

Doh, didn't notice that.

Any idea how this will function with an aftermarket CF or FRP hood? I'm assuming the lighter weight will have an effect on the "sweet spot" and the ability of these struts to function as intended?

We're not 100% sure yet, as the weights of these other hoods havent been released yet, BUT I do know a few things:

The stock hood is aluminum, and VERY light at just a shade over 15lbs. It will be hard to beat that sort of weight in FRP or CFRP. The Seibon carbon hood weighs almost exactly what the aluminum piece does, so it will function nearly identical.

When I say "it will be hard to beat that sort of weight in FRP and CFRP" I am speaking from experience. I spent over a year making FRP and CFRP body pieces including hoods, so I know how difficult it is to make a cosmetically beautiful (read: smooth) as well as functional (read: has a working, durable hood latch) and still be able to remove weight when compared to an aluminum hood.

Time will tell as these hoods start coming out and the weights of them are released, but for now it looks like these might be just fine. So knowing the weights of these new hoods coming out will answer most of this question. The only other variable being: How faithfully does the company producing the hood reproduce the "skeleton structure" under the top skin of the hood.

:happy0180:

Keep an eye out, as we'll probably start a list to see who's interested on Monday. Help us get an idea of how many of these kits we should run for the first batch. We're getting close! Have a nice/safe weekend folks!

Price with freight to Oz is going to be the crunch but the low $US is helping compensate.
Count me in as long as freight doesn't spoil it.
