How easy is it for everyone to downshift into 5th gear? I always encounter some resistance doing so; it never goes in as easily as downshifting to 2nd-4th gear.

Every time I up or downshift into 2nd, there is a very audible thunk and mechanical feeling in the shifter, but no grinding. I also have to let off the clutch slower than all the other gears or it'll be a very jerky shift, and this happens whether the car is cold or warm. Every other gear is fine

Trans flush to Pentosin MTF-2 is the solution, it's like
butter even in the coldest weather (Montreal) Feels like a diiferent transmission now, smooth with no restrictions at all. |

Transmission syncros
I've been having the same problem with my first and second gears too. Bought my fr-s about a month ago. It has about 800 miles on it and it is definitely something wrong. Mine seems to be particularly bad on first drive, when car is cold and has been sitting. Has anyone took their's to the dealership to get it checked out?

Change the oil for Pentosin MTF-2 as suggested, I will on mine when the weather cools down. Just for the record. I picked up my GTS86 manual on Xmas Eve and have clocked just over 1000km. I can snick it into 1st gear while it's moving without any problems at 20kph. No double clutching to rev match, just shove it from 2nd into 1st and let the clutch out. There have been many posts saying you can't, shouldn't shift into 1st unless it's stationary and it's a load of old cobblers. |

Great! They sell it just up the road, 20km away. 3.78L of MT-90 is $168! Last edited by sierra; 12-31-2012 at 12:14 AM. |

The preferred weight for the rear diff is 75W85. Here is a link to the proper weight Redline oil... http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=40&pcid=4 75W85 is fairly common in the Toyota world, and may be in stock at your local Toyota dealer. 75W90 GL5 is also acceptable for the rear end, and may be easier to find.

I'll chase up the Pentosin on Wednesday. It should be in stock at the dealers. Thanks for the info. If i change the diff oil too I want to get a good fully synthetic oil. It seems to be the theme that they didn't exactly break the bank with the oil they used in the Subaru factory For anyone in Oz also looking there's a couple of local oils with good reputations that might also be ok. Both fully synthetic. This one over in Queensland with the Gear SYN 7590. http://www.synforce.com.au/gear_oils.html Scroll down Also Penrite Pro Gear 75w-90 which I have in my Triton and after trying several is by far the best. http://www.penriteoil.com.au/product...d_products=376 |

That's awful mate. Way to expensive there but if you did want to go that route, on redlines website you put it the make and model and it will find you all the right fluid. Either way, redline or not, changing the fluid seems to be the way to go. Especially tranny fluid.
