From my little bit of research. They're in the $500-$700 range

So if you are going to run strictly on dyno tunes do you need the cable and license to have that done?

You always need the ECUtek license. The cable is not needed if the person performing your dyno tune has one (and since that tuner has to own ECUTek's software, it's probably a safe assumption that he has a cable)

I don't think it's fair to say you don't need the cable, and here's why: If you're getting a local dyno tune, okay fine it sort of makes sense to skip the cable, but wouldn't you still want to log occasionally or if an issue develops (it's a good habit to log)? At this point a lot of people are getting remote tunes, so the cable is a necessity unless you want to bug JoeBob down the street for his cable everyday (if JoeBob even lives down the street, that is).

Sure you can say that TECHNICALLY not everyone will need the cable. I would counter that most people at this stage of the game SHOULD have a cable and that should be reflected in the pricing when people ask how much a tune costs. You people who don't want cables: you want cables, you want to log, it will save you and your car one day.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the cable that you need a simple ODB2->USB cable? You can get those all over the place for $15....whys everyone even mentioning it?

So the ECUtek is like permission to go in and alter the CPU via that software, and the cable is what allows tuners(or you) to update that software via whatever means you use.

Only the ECUtek cable works with their software.

Maybe the wording was confusing based on the post i quoted. What i meant was you will always need the cable to flash the car. I think there will be a point where you won't need a license. It won't be with ecutek software but i'm sure some open source stuff will be developed much like ecuflash etc.

Huh, interesting. I can't see any advantages to using a proprietary cable over a generic one other then making it more difficult to counterfeit/ easy to price gouge.

I'm not defending ECUTek here because the cable is extremely overpriced, but another reason for this proprietary cable is to keep things as closed as possible and try and prevent their methods to be stolen as it has happened in the past.
