ALL insurance is based on the premise that the contracting parties enter into the contract with utmost good faith. YOU have a duty of disclosure to advise them of anything that would: affect their decision to insure you, and the terms they would insure for.
Just saying...

Ask a body shop owner which insurance company is good. The will tell you that the cheap rate firms insist on the lowest cost replacement parts (not OEM) and do not reimburse quickly. In short, if you want good service from a body shop, work with an insurance company that treats them right, as well as you. |

work in this biz. the difficulty in verifying mileage is one reason behind the Snapshot and Onstar-based pay-as-you-drive programs that report mileage and behavior independently. Because they are verifiable, the discount is much greater. The less you drive, the less risk you pose.
That said, there are a lot of instances where your mileage is verified to other people -- at emissions time, for example, or during warranty or service work. I don't know of any company checking those sources routinely, but many of them do random audits. Carfax is marketing itself to insurance companies in this capacity. I've not heard of anyone pursued for fraud over false low-mileage estimates. The worst thing that is likely happen is that they would ask for payment of missed high-miles premiums before paying a claim, or nonrenew because you misrepresented. That can be a big deal, because a lapse in coverage (or an outright cancellation) means you will have a very hard time getting affordable coverage on the next policy. Insurance is really just buying your next accident on the installment plan. Factors like your mileage, your location and your driving record are what the carrier uses to compute when that accident will be -- but they all do the math differently. Keep shopping around. We pulled comparable car insurance quotes from six big insurers for every ZIP in the nation, and the differences between companies were pretty huge (usually thousands of dollars). |

Geico has never been cheap for me.
Much lower rates out there. You commit fraud and they will deny your claim period. You also get black listed by all insurance companies. Have fun paying your next premium. |

It's true that the insurance company would more than likely not persue fraud charges against any one. Also, no insurance company would get heart burn over some small amount of mileage over the estimate. But, what if the mileage was two or three times the amount of the estimate? They would simply void the policy, return your premium as if you had never taken out the policy and you would be on your own for any of the damages.

Regarding mileage, it's not something that really ever comes up. As it's already been said, an estimate is just that, a guess. You tell your insurance company that you guess, based on current circumstances, that you may or may not hit a certain mileage requirement; stuff comes up in life that's unpredictable and at your policy renewal, it's your job to state whether you think any data you gave the insurance provider will change. Nobody can predict things to absolutes, and most insurance adjusters don't check such things (who has time to dig up somebody's underwriting data to verify mileage). Hell, the only reason most insurance companies check mileage is to rule out potential fraud from accidents that might happen before a policy starts. With regard to getting dropped from your carrier, it really depends on the company. Some are very particular with what criteria they use to write your policy and what types of drivers they want to insure (for all you West Coasters, Wawanesa is a great example of this). Some companies will insure anybody, but charge silly premiums to insure non-standard (high risk) drivers. |
