Is it possible for black coloured oil to have been thermally broken down and losing viscosity? Of course it is. But apparently to them, no.

Perhaps they are basing on the black oil colour directly after the oil change (diesel anyone?) then it starts to make more sense. However more of a statement is needed to make it solid.

Thats what they were stating is a myth, -changing your oil just by looking at the color-. I agree their bottomline statement is very misleading. They just didn't use good terminology but I get what they are saying.

As I mentioned, I drained oil after 25 miles and it was black just like a 3K mile oil change.

It's funny how they mentioned the smell b/c have you smelled Motul oil? It actually smells like cherries!

+1 My EJ25 loves it. I was previously using Mobil Synthetic, but I've since jumped on the GC bandwagon. Although, I am of the opinion that an oil brand isn't as important as using the correct weight and changing oil often.

You need to buy the ester based synthetic oil. There is a long explanation for why gear oil smells burnt, but ester based oil smells like fruit.

Currently using Red Line in my transmission and differential, but it still smelled bad. No where close to fruity, unless it was a durian.

All of that tranny gear oil reeks. I got a couple bottles leftover from when I changed out the tranny fluid in my Celica stinking up my outside storage closet.

Redline is not ester based. There are very few synthetics that are ester based.

If you don't want Durian, find an ester based lubricant.

Says it is. I thought Red Line, Motul, and Maxima were the major ester-based lube companies.

Those are typically Group V oils, which are actually defined as oils that don't fall within Groups I-IV. I know Redline makes a lot of Group V oils.

I'll stick with my Group IV polyolefin (PAO) oils!

Have you tried durian? How bad is the smell? Is it like a stinkbomb smell? I've recently heard of it b/c of Bizzare foods. There is a 99 Ranch here that I believe sells it. A few coworker dared me to bring it to a potluck and see what happens.

Unless it's $15 to $20 a quart, I don't think it's pure ester based.

Redline may be using a blend with ester, but the base stock may be synthetic but not ester based. The base stock may be refined and tested to higher temperatures and thus the smell.

It's an ester base stock with some PAO, just like the Motul 8100 line. The Motul Gear 300 is about $15 per quart, compared to the MT-90 I bought, at about $14 per quart.

Maybe I'll try it when I get my next car, it's not that much more expensive and if it smells like fruit they'll have a customer for life.
