Consider the type of people who actually bought the iPad mini. Do you think they're really concerned with the realistic value of stuff they buy?

Its a lot of work getting the tablet working as a replacement for a head unit trust me. Android is by far a better option if you want a usable ui in the car. Its far more customizable its taken me months now to get it where i am happy, I could have never done it with an apple product. The ipad cost is very extreme as well for the feature set and for those in cold and hot climates consider the cost of hardware failure as well.

Whats so hard to understand?
Nothing on the market single or double din size can measure up to the potential of an Android or Ipad device,

Features, screen resolution, screen scrolling, apps, ?

That's just it, tablets can't measure up in that application. Sure, you get the bragging rights of having ICS or Jelly Bean, but as a car stereo? They suck. Change the volume, expand the storage, listen to the radio without a data connection, auto turning on and off, sound output, etc.

That's why a head unit that runs Android is a much better application for the car. You just have to make too many sacrifices using a tablet, and even more using an iPad. Unless you want the bragging rights that you did it, then by all means.

It all depends on what you're going for and how much $ you're willing to part with. A top of the line HU with all the bells and whistles will set you back +1K. The iPad Mini plus Audison will set you back around the same $ and work even better when you consider your HU (ipad) has up to date maps with real time traffic info. Iheartradio will get you most radio stations that are out there. No more fumbling with the phone to see your text messages. Most HU tout how well they work with the iPhone but when you go this route you aren't integrating, your implementing. The biggest hurdle I see is hands free calling.

That's great if you have unlimited data. But what about the other stuff I listed like changing the volume, expanding the storage, powering on and off, sound quality, adjusting speaker fade/balance?

And what's the issue with current iPod/iPhone integration? You can play all your music/pictures/videos while making hands free calling. I'm not sure what else you'd like to do with it?

Has any tablet allowed video in to date? This is the feature that seems to elude all tablets and prevents any rear cam installations..

The video in is one I hadn't thought of as well as the power on off feature. I suppose the power on/off functionality could be solved with a magnet set up like embedded in the smart cover or just slap the smart cover on when parking for stealth mode. Volume, fader, and balance can be handled with the Audison Bit One. Storage can be handled with the cloud if necessary but I think 32gb even when coding the music at 320mbps is more than enough storage unless you plan to watch movies while driving.

Any way you slice it there are downfalls and advantages to either set up. I replaced my factory HU with a Kenwood DDX-719 which is pretty good but the need to plug my phone in sucks and I could just stream BT but the SQ when streaming sucks and the album art doesn't show up. I can purchase the Garmin app for Nav for about $150 to add this function but don't know how good it will be. My family is completely set up with Apple products so the familiarity is a big plus for us. We even use iPads at work instead of printing spec books and what not. It's not a perfect solution but depending on what your going for I think it would be pretty damn nice.

I think someone should take the ball and run with it.
We did not get significant interest to develop a kit ourselfs but if the option was available, I still think enough people would be happy to have an iPad mini kit.
