I would agree that competition can be found anywhere. That doesn't mean that everyone is on as level a playing field as a spec class. Just ask the Mustangs running in the Continental GS field this year when they made a decision to all pull their cars off track mid race because they didn't get a rules adjustment from their sanctioning body. What tends to happen in non spec racing classes is once the hot car and build is discovered, people tend to gravitate to it as to not be at a disadvantage. Spec E30s, Spec Miatas, and 944Spec cars are all relatively close in speed, and I love racing against them when I don't have in class cars to race with

Considering I do all my racing in the PacNW I'm probably off either racing FWD or AWD anyway because of the rain.

I think the best time to race these cars anyway will be in 5 or so years. Like Dave mentioned, it will fit into IT classes. Also the aftermarket support will be tremendous. Not just for after market parts but also OEM parts like gaskets, pumps, lines, bearings etc etc. But the race stuff too like camber kits, spherical bearings, bushing kits, etc etc.

I would love to see SubaYota throw loads of cash at a nationally televised spec series! However, I think it's unnecessary from their financial point of view as FT86's are going to be in both the Continental Tire challenge AND the Pirelli World challenge next year which will offer them plenty of TV time, especially if they do well.

As for the TDI cup, the Mustang Challenge series and the MX-5 cup... anyone know what it costs to field a car for a season in one of those series? Let's just say, if you can afford it, Obama wants to raise your taxes!

If you can afford to build an FRS into a w2w car at this moment in time, Obama probably wants to raise your taxes too

Thanks for that tip. Had not seen this development.

I don't know about anyone else but I really like watch "attainable" cars race. The WTCC and BTCC are some of my favorite racing series along with Continental and Pirelli world challenge series. In April I flew to SLC/Miller Motosports Park to see the Pirelli series (specifically the B-spec cars) and had a darn good time. I could associate, personally, will all the cars; from the mustang, the porshes to the mazdas and Fiat 500's. Racing was close, strategic and exciting. As fans at the event what we noticed is the racing with the big expensive fast cars, was the least exciting racing of the whole weekend. That was also the consensus of the fans around us too.

For the fans @ the track... The slow cars were the stars of the show.

Interesting -

Toyota Racing Development has just announced a Toyota 86 spec series in Japan and details about the prepped spec 86 racer. Several enthusiasts had a feeling that the 86/BRZ/FR-S would create a new spec series, but unfortunately there is no word of this coming to the U.S. Not only is this exciting news for racers, but 86/BRZ/FR-S owners because this will encourage more race focused parts to be produced for the 86.

“86 Racing” Toyota 86 additional parts list from stock vehicle form:
Front Brake Ducts
Front disc brake dust covers
Front and rear tow hooks
Air cooled engine oil cooler
Roll cage
Special “86 Racing” floor mats
TAKATA 4 point harnesses
The race series will be organized by GAZOO Racing, who recently dominated the 24 Hour of the Nurburgring with two Toyota 86 and a Lexus LFA. The “86 Racing” 86 will be shipping in mid-January 2013 and available to purchase at your local Japanese Toyota dealership.

It makes more sense for this to start in Japan. Heck it makes more sense for it to even exist... in Japan. Different cultural appreciate for motorsports on tracks that turn left and right.

I dunno how popular GX will be, what with ALMS and Grand AM combining forces for the following season.

It sounds like it will be a more expensive version of the Continental ST class.
