Yes, because when a Company wants to draw upon a former Cars heritage so they can name it that they go with a completely different car. Toyota: Hey guys were coming out with this new sports car! Were gonna draw upon the Supra's Heritage! Us: Yay! Toyota: Ok here's all this stuff talking about the Supra and how were modeling it after it! Us: Yay! Toyota: OK guys were gonna name it.... CELICA! Yay! Us: WTF? See how that works? They are NOT going to name it Celica or they would have drawn upon the years of the CELICA'S hertiage. Not the AE86. Don't forget at one point all of Toyota's Cars were RWD. Perhaps they can name it the AA? You know because it was RWD.

^ Celica = Toyota's most recognizable sports car brand worldwide. Not Supra, not Corolla, Celica. It's quite literally Toyota's Mustang.
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it being called Celica worldwide (what do you care, it's going to be a Scion in the US) but I'd prefer it to get a new unique, sensible name. That being said, it's not about whose "heritage" it has, rather, which label can get more people to come into the showroom to check it out. Sorry, Corolla != sports car. |

+1. If Toyota is going to go with a historical name, Celica makes the most sense. However I wouldn't mind if they came up with a new name, an actual name and not just a few letters or numbers. |

Toyota needs to come up with a new name for the car, whether it be FR-S, 86 (eight-six/eighty six), or something else. I personally like 86 since it's a throwback to the cars "spirit" without referencing the corolla or trueno name. It's new enough that the young crowd will think its just a new car, but the car enthusiast will associate it with the old AE86. |

Celica as the name makes no sense for this car. As nate89 said, people remember the Celica as a FF girl's car. Enthusiasts who remember its RWD days are few and far in between. Supra wouldn't work quite simply because Supra's performance is way above what this would be. It's akin to naming the next Nissan Silvia a Nissan GT-R, and dilutes the Supra as a brand name. The purpose of this car is totally different from the Supra. But it seems like a lot of people on here are in denial of that, and expect it to be 300 horsepower and destroy a 370Z on the track. Considering this car is going to be like a 2+2 coupe version of a Miata (as far as niche is concerned), Celica or Supra don't work.
Plus, if the car hopes to do well in Japan, they'd need to have some variant of the "86" in the name. RWD sports coupes are hopelessly unpopular in Japan, and the only saving grace is that the AE86 name still has a lot of cachet there. |

I actually wouldn't mind if they name it the Toyota FR-S. It's filling the void left by the MR2/MR-S anyway.

I dunno about you guys..i remember when Celica was part of motorsports and im not that old. Only the last gen model was the one i felt like did have a place in the motorsports worldwide.
Other than that..I think Celica is a fine name to slap on the ft86. But not Supra or Corolla.

what..the...fuck.. are you smoking...FR-S does not fill the void left by a midship squirrly sports car. If the FR-S comes out..guess what....there is still a void that needs to be filled by a midship sports car with an MR title attached to it..
