FT-86 Production Name

There's a lot of controversy where the FT86 will fit into Toyotas lineup, in terms of name. There are a few options flying around:

Celica
Corolla (Levin or Trueno included)
Sprinter

Do you think it'll go under one of those historic names or will it have a completely new model name all together? Or maybe will it come under another already known model? Leave your comments!

Toyota gonna name after me.:bellyroll:
anyways, they might keep it ask FT-86 or maybe take of the 86 and make it FT.

Personally, I think it'll come under the Celica namesake.

For those young out there, there was a time when the Celica was a very sporty car. Even the Supra actually stemmed from the Celica (I actually had an MA61 Celica Supra!) back in the days when RWD was still the most commonly produced platform (pre-1984). Only after then the Celica was retarded by the FF platform; still living out its days as Toyotas budget level sports car, despite having the most suitable platform for it.

Yeah the name was damaged, but I can't see why it couldn't be revived. Anyone who cares will know it's RWD anyway and not a nerfed FWD. Could be a good excuse for old Celica pics to be in the promo gear too. :)

Might be why the project was codenamed 086A too, A being the designation for the Celica platform (RAxx, MAxx, GAxx, JZAxx, etc) with the engine code being infront of that.

For those who don't know: The AE86 was marketed in Japan as a Corolla Levin and Corolla Trueno, USA as a Corolla GTV and SR5 (right?) and in Australia as the Toyota Sprinter (hence why it is the third option).

sprinter name is already taken in the US.

My vote is for FT-86. its already catchy

They can't call it the "FT" anything as "FT" stands for "Future Toyota"...

"Celica" will garner more love than any other name, and it's totally appropriate for this car.

Hell, going by it's power:weight and looks, you might think of this as the last gen Celica done properly :D

Levin or Trueno would be awesome, but I think they're going for something new, which would also be a good move.

They're not gonna name it Celica. I'm sure of that.

Whose "they?"

Both myself and another poster (OldSchoolToys, I believe) explained that this would not be a good move because Toyota is trying start fresh, and the Celica nameplate is a tired one that really has no appeal to the general public. If Toyota hypes up a "new Celica" to the public when the marketing machine begins, people are going to yawn... because while they didn't "care" for the Celica, the collective consciousness remembers it as a car that Toyota has had for a long time. Hell, most people might not even know it was discontinued a year back.

Now, take the exact same commercials and replace "all new Celica" with "the (insert new nameplate), and it will be more likely to strike a chord with the public.

Oh, and I'll take that bet. Loser buys the winner a beer at the first big FT86 meet.
