When was your shift point?

I do believe that when drag racing you would want to shift near peak power (7K) since power actually drops off after 7K.

Either way I'm kind of suprised on this one. Considier stock the RX-8 is barely faster than a RSX Type S and I raced my friends Type S and got him by a car+

Not really. Were not talking subsidiaries here with different designers, engineers, plants etc. Just branding/marketing. Designed 100%, ground up by Toyota/Subaru engineers and manufactured in Subaru's Gunma, Japan factory using Subaru parts by Subaru techs, there's nothing "Scion" about the FR-S.

the frs is a scion. really. besides, neither class nor history makes it faster than the hyundai at a drag strip which is the topic of this thread.

I used to have manual RX-8 and now have manual BRZ. I never drove either of them in auto version though. RX-8 is heavier, but only makes less than 10 ft/lb more of torque. I would say that RX-8 feels faster. But it is still close race. You need to launch at 5-6000 RPM in both cars to get good results. In both cars the best initial acceleration is reached when you let clutch slip for at 1-1.5 second at lauch. In both cars you need to upshift close to redline - 7200 and 9000 RPM.

i wasnt doubting the camry's time. its the camaro that probably set the record for crappiest 1/4 mile time ever for the 5th gens. its like if someone posted a vid of a FR-S running a high 17-18 sec 1/4mile

When I drove his RX-8, there was an audible beep at 9000 rpm reminding the driver to shift. He told me that there's a fail safe system that cuts off fuel *I think* at close to 10,000 rpm if the driver doesn't pull back.

I think many of the people who call the RX-8 slow either only had experience with an automatic one, which never should have been made (just like the FR-S- just my opinion!), or they haven't really experienced the manual one.

It's not a barnstorming torque monster, but it's quicker than widely acknowledged. MotorTrend quoted a consistent 5.9 second 0 to 60 time, and my experience seemed consistent with that.

I say this as someone who was on the fence between a 350Z and a RX8 back in 2006, and the RX8 was way more sports car than the Z, even if the Z was slightly faster in a straight line (and it really was only slightly faster).

Nissan now up-powered the Z to a larger, more powerful 3.7 liter, obviously, but it still handles like a pig compared to the FR-S or RX-8, IMO. Japanese Camaro, indeed.
That's your opinion!

Base curb weight of 370Z 3,250 lbs
Base curb weight of a Camaro V6 3,750 lbs

Also a 911 had a base curb weight of 3,150 lbs so I guess its a fat pig also?

lol don't kid yourself... the 135i would destroy the FRS/BRZ from 60-130mph. he was probably still in 6th gear the whole time...

Possibly, but how would I know,i was too busy navigating turns through highway over and underpasses.I never said we were running a straight line.needless to say he was impressed. When we finally came down to cruising speeds,he gave me the thumbs up and continued to eyeball my frs until i got on the off ramp.
